Choosing classes

My son will be attending the 1st Orientation Session in June (June 12th to 14th)? According to the schedule there will be academic counseling on Friday. What flexibility is there when choosing classes? Is there a standard set of classes that students take first semester based on majors? Also, has anybody here been involved in the “Core Program.” What is your opinion regarding these classes?

Everything you need to know about orientation will be here: [Boston University Orientation »](Orientation)

The standard set of classes really depends on the school, for example I’m in ENG so I have to take some intro to engineering classes, the general math classes (whatever you place into), humanities classes, etc etc. I believe if you just google the core curriculum for whatever school you can find it.

Thank you. My son and I have read and heard about the different Core Options between attending the Accepted Student’s Day and reading the information on line. I guess my question is whether my son needs to go to academic advising with a list of classes that he wants to take or if the Advisor will have a pre-planned list of classes for his major at CAS.

I don’t think your son will need any lists, the advisors will guide him onto the right track with the schedule he wants. He’ll be fine. :)

You can also look up your sons major and ‘course path’ on google or something along the lines of that, also adding in BU to your search. Usually they’ll have something useful for ya.

The advisor is there to help your son pick classes, but there’s generally no absolute set classes he has to take. Normally, freshmen take Writing 100, one or two of the intro classes to their major, and one or two gen ed classes, either part of the Core Curriculum or just any Divisional class.
