Choosing engineering schools..

Hey there.
I have a list of engineering schools that I would consider going to, but I'm not quite sure which colleges to take off the list.

Here's the colleges:
Boston U
Brown
Bucknell
Butler
Carnegie Mellon
Case Western Reserve
Clemson
Columbia
Cooper Union
Cornell
Dartmouth
Detroit Mercy
Drexel
Duke
Georgia Tech
Hofstra
Iowa State
Johns Hopkins
Kansas
Lafayette
Lehigh
Northeastern
Northwestern
Notre Dame
Oklahoma State (in state)
U Penn
Princeton
Purdue
RPI
Rice
U Rochester
Rochester IT
Rose-Hulman IT
Rowan
Saint Louis
Southern Methodist
Stevens IT
Temple
Texas-Dallas
Texas Tech
Texas A&M
Trinity-TX
Tufts
Tulsa (in state)
Vanderbilt
Villanova
Virginia Tech
WPI

Here's some things I would like in my college:
Mid-sized school
Strong undergrad engineering program (probably MechEng...not definite)
Looking at doing co-op, internship, or research during college
No schools doing the 3/2 Dual Degree Engineering!
Financial Aid will be needed
No "party schools"
School where conservative views are respected
Good engineering school, but not an exclusively engineering school..I kinda want to have some liberal arts in my education

And here's some info about me:
White male
Sophomore in HS
Catholic
I live in Oklahoma
I'm hopefully going to a competitive math and science school junior and senior years (Oklahoma School of Science and Math)
31 ACT in October 2009 (33-English, 30-Math, 28-Reading, 31-Science)..taking again
1880 SAT in March 2010 (570-CR, 720-Math, 590-Writing)

Not great EC's:
Academic Team both years
FIRST Robotics Team both years (won a regional and went to World Competition freshman year) (also a member of the Drive Team on my team)
Youth Alive both years
Varsity Swimming both years
JV Tennis and Varsity Alternate both years
Volunteered at church, MathCOUNTS Competitions, etc.
Worked at concession stand for baseball park during summer
Worked for iPod cover business at mall for about 2 years

Mainly, even though I'm a sophomore now, I just want to get an idea of schools to take off my list, and what would be safeties/matches/reaches, etc.

Thank you for reading this long thread. You are cool in my book. :)
5pencer

Take Brown, Butler, Detroit, and Rowan off your list.

A lot depends on your SATs when you re-take them.
What is your GPA?

I think its 4.0 UW, 4.07 W…something like that
I dont quite understand our grading system

And what are your reasons for saying those schools?
I just want to know

Take off Saint Louis and add Missouri S&T (fits well your criteria).

I have a son going to Tulsa in Computer Science…he loves it.

He has a strong liberal arts bent as well and is in the honors program studying great classics of Western Civ and also taking Jazz Piano along with his science, math and engineering courses, so that give him and outlet for those other interests.

Also, he is a Christian and is involved in several campus ministries, there are several good ones to choose from at Tulsa.

How much you have to contribute (EFC) might play a role in choosing and excluding schools.

Thats true roderick…but im not gonna know that until senior year

definitely keep Clemson on your list, here’s why:

Mid-sized school - YES, 13,780 undergraduates

Strong undergrad engineering program (probably MechEng…not definite) - Clemson’s best and most popular major is engineering. I think mechanical is the biggest engineering major (in terms of people choosing it) at Clemson.

Looking at doing co-op, internship, or research during college - Our cooperative education program is great ([Clemson University : Cooperative Education Program : Co-op Program](<a href=“Cooperative Education - Clemson Center for Career and Professional Development”>Cooperative Education - Clemson Center for Career and Professional Development)), we have tons of internship opportunities (our career services office was recently ranked 3rd by the princeton review!). At Clemson we have a great program called Creative Inquiry which allows an undergrad (I even know freshman participating in this!) to do research ([Clemson University : Creative Inquiry : Creative Inquiry](http://www.clemson.edu/academics/programs/creative_inquiry/))

No schools doing the 3/2 Dual Degree Engineering! - No 3/2 engineering at Clemson! Get a degree in 4 years or 5 (if you do co-op or want to get a Masters degree too)

Financial Aid will be needed - Well I can’t answer that since I’m not sure what your family’s financial situation is. If you have an ACT of 31 and are ranked in the top 10% of your high school, I do know that you can get a big scholarship.

No “party schools” - There are parties at Clemson but it is not known as a hard core party school like other schools (Florida, West Virginia, Mississippi, Penn State etc…). If you aren’t into parties, there is tons of stuff to do on campus.

School where conservative views are respected - Clemson is a conservative-majority school. Lots of conservatives here.

Good engineering school, but not an exclusively engineering school…I kinda want to have some liberal arts in my education - We have tons of liberal arts departments here and if you want you can get a minor in a field you are interested in! We also are required to take 5 liberal arts courses (2 in social sciences, 1 literature, 1 non-literature humanities class and 1 other of your choice). You can take more if you can handle that in your schedule!

Stevens and Rowan are worth a visit and close look. Good luck!

1down12togo – can you tell me more about Stevens?

Their basketball team $uck$ (sorry, couldn’t resist).

They have a basketball team?
