So I'm not familiar with how Berkeley does their whole scheduling of classes thing; I'm kinda guestimating.

So I see it says there is a waitlist for a certain political science class but then it says "12 seats available". I'm guessing that Cal reserves certain spots in some departments/classes for those majoring in it and that the waitlist is for non-majors? Is this the case?

I'm going to CalSo in a few weeks and I applied as a history major but am fulfilling all the requirements for political science...will I be able to enroll?

Thanks!

Or…new theory, the people on the waitlist already exceeded their phase 1 units? And only people who are in phase 2 or phase 1 and haven’t exceeded their units can register for the seats available?

some classes have multiple categories for enrollment. Might be some seats for people with declared majors in that subject, another set of seats for freshmen, a set that require a unique code from the prof( eg by permission) and more that are open to anyone. These restrictions and groups are listed for the class. If the open group is filled but space exists in the other groups, then you start seeing both waitlists and available spaces.

Waitlist classes count against your units. Your guess about phase II is not right.
