Most colleges I’ve looked at on the common app ask you about what your primary academic interests are. A lot of the colleges I’m applying to give you the option to choose multiple intended majors in order of interest. I was wondering if choosing several possible areas of study gives colleges the impression that you aren’t fully devoted to one academic topic and that you’re fickle. Do you think it’s safer to choose one intended major rather than three?
I chose the two I was interested in and it worked out fine. Be honest and choose what you’re interested in (or undecided if that’s the case). They wouldn’t put multiple spaces to fill out if it would hurt applicants. Admissions officers understand people are people and might have a range of interests or might be super focused on only one. They’re just trying to get a better sense of who you are.
Many people apply to college as undecided so I can’t imagine that it will matter. Put in your top couple of choices and don’t stress about it. In general you only need to have an academic interest set in stone is if you apply to a specific program (ex. business, engineering, nursing etc.)
