"In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose a question of your own. If your prompt is original and thoughtful, then you should have little trouble writing a great essay."

Does the question we ask have to be something weird and thoughtful like the ones they provide? Would asking something normal and boring like one of the CA essay prompts that would fit with our essay be frowned upon?

I was admitted EA Class of 2018 and chose my own prompt. I would say Uchicago really likes outside the box thinkers, and the prompts they give you really challenge you to write creative responses. In my opinion, the create your own prompt is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your creativity and thoughtfulness even more. It’s a chance for you to stand out. I would reckon something normal wouldn’t be a good idea… unless you come up with a really great response. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert, but feel free to PM me for advice.

@guccigirl hey, I’m choosing prompt 5 and my question is more of me as a social critic rather than personal; what was yours like, since you got accepted?
