Choosing the right school: McGill or UBC

I have offers from UBC and McGill to do a BA program but need to decide soon.

Personally, i'm leaning towards UBC because of several reasons like the fact that it might be easier to get a part-time job and internships in Vancouver as compared to French-speaking Montreal.

I have also asked this question on several other forums but most replies given suggested that McGill is better because it has more cachet than UBC and other reasons as well.

But, what confuses me is, if McGill is really that good, why is it ranked below UBC in the THE and ARWU rankings?

Don't get me wrong; i'm not looking for an excuse to put McGill down but i just hope somebody can enlighten me on this part. Rankings might not usually be accurate but i think THE and ARWU are at least more reliable than QS.

Second, I have also heard that McGill is experiencing a shortage of funds and its reputation is going downhill now whereas UBC is rising. Is it true?

Third, which school has a better career services office?

Fourth, I read somewhere that UBC has a better economics department than McGill. What about political science and psychology?

I would really really appreciate if you can shed some light on this as i need to make a decision real soon. Thanks much :)

Is most of what you hear coming from CC??

If you do not speak French, your chances of getting a part time job off campus in Montr

I would say go to MCgill because it has a better international recognition. It is not about ranking. Both are rated highly. UBC is a very good school and anyone in Canada would probably tell you that both schools are great schools but where are you planing to work/settle eventually? USA -choose Mcgill, Canada?- Any of the two is okay. Regarding, working while in school- Vancouver maybe easier but the thing I love about Montreal is that you are taught in English but the city allows you to work on your French language which may come in handy if you are looking at working with an international organisation. Are you Canadian? Depending on which province you come from, tuition maybe cheaper for you if you come from where you intend to study and so are some scholarships. However, tuition in Canada is not like in the states. Good luck making a decision.

All I can say is as a Californian about to study at UBC, this city is just GORGEOUS, I love it. I think weather is not so good and it’s not as beautiful in Montreal.

You’re absolutely right. UBC is on the rise…McGill is only better known in Europe because of all the French applicants. Their admission rate is rising whereas UBC is getting better and better with time. Not to mention that Vancouver is a simply stunning city. The Harvard of Canada is Toronto, UBC is the next best.
