I heard that for certain schools (at least those in top 25 of us news ranking), applying as undecided can hinder your chance of getting in. Is that true? and if so, how would you go about choosing a major if you're not sure?

This is very school specific, or even specific to the division within the school.

For example, at UC Berkeley, all freshmen admitted to the College of Letters and Science enter as undeclared. But freshmen admitted to the College of Engineering may be admitted declared as a specific major or as undeclared, and the selectivity may vary depending on the popularity of the different majors.

You would have to analyize it school by school. I don’t think it influences admissions at Brown. My daughter was undeclared, although her major EC was science related. I might be wrong. They do (or used to) let science majors submit a suplemental essay and have something extra on visit day.

This does not seem to be an issue for Yale either.
