When a college allows you to choose your own essay topic, instead of the others suggested, would it be in one’s best interests to choose the suggested topics, rather than creating your own? Or can choosing your own essay topic make you look like a better canidate?
<p>It would depend on what you chose to write on, and ultimately, how well you write it (this would apply to any essay). I think the colleges are more concerned with the content, then whether you created your own topic (if that's an option) or chose one of the suggested topics.</p>

<p>Should the topic be related to your major? For instance I am going into Engi hopefully but I might write about political tension (and otherwise) around the globe. Would this be acceptable?</p>
<p>Of course! The purpose of your essay is to allow the ascoms a glimpse into who you really are. Whatever topic you choose should be something that will allow the adcom to get a feel for "the real you" behind all the numbers and statistics.</p>
