Choral Groups

How do you join one of the choral groups? Do you get credits or letter grades if you join a choir? When is the audition? How about theater acting?

Some groups are school-sponsored (concert choir, chamber chorus, women's chorale) and others are student-organized groups (all of the a capella groups). The school-sponsored groups can be taken for 6 units of academic credit per term. Similarly, there are school-sponsored and student-sponsored theatre groups.

A list of arts groups at MIT can be found here.

Auditions are held at a different time for each group, but you will get all the information you need at the Activites Midway during Orientation -- that's when you can sign up for audition times. There will probably be some information on auditions coming in the First-Year Summer Mailing, which I think should get to you sometime in July.

So basically, this is how it works:

You show up for the Activities Midway, and you get stopped about 50 times by people asking you to audition for a capella groups. The first 15 times you explain, "oh thanks, but you don't WANT me in your group," and then after awhile you just learn to ignore them.

If, however, you're into that kind of thing, I imagine you rather enjoy the attention. =)

Thanks! So, exactly how many credits do I need to graduate from MIT? Choir does not count toward GPA, right? How many non-GPA-related credits may I take and still meet the graduation requirement?

There's no limit to the number of non-major/non-GPA credits you can take for graduation -- you just have to take 180 units outside the GIRs for a single major, no other restrictions apply.

From the wording in the course catalogue, I am pretty sure choir is for a grade...? Actually, it looks like if you take two semesters of choir for credit, it will count as one HASS elective.

Each of the following subjects earns 6 units. A total of 12 units is needed for a subject to count toward Institute Requirements in Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, by petition to the COC.

Choir is for a grade, really? Doesn't that mean an easy A? Mollie, would you please ask any of your friends whether anybody got a B or below in the choir before? Thanks!

this is getting a little ridiculous

I don't know many people in choir... you might want to ask Sam.
