A concurrent, somewhat similar thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1003973-music-schools-double-degree-program.html. It would be worth a read, as would be a perusal of the previous music ed/education threads that can be found here.

As I said, the instrumental performance/music ed dual path is a very structured, time and credit intensive major. Some will say that vocalists may have it a bit easier, simply because you cannot put as much practice time on your instrument as would a string student.

Check out Eastman. They really value performance for all students. The music ed majors take the same lessons, same teachers, same music core. Many students end up doubling if that is their interest, and they all have the same performance opportunities. The music ed students are very much respected, in fact, music ed is a very difficult admit at Eastman. That is not the case everywhere, so check carefully as you do your research. In some schools, the voice students in music ed do not have hour long lessons, no coaching, and their teachers are grad students, not the performance faculty–and they are not permitted to take performance classes like opera scenes or select ensembles. DD is not officially a double major, but this semester she is doing everything required of the voice performance students, plus everything required of the music ed students, plus everything recommended for the music ed students. She is happy as can be. Is it easy? I don’t think so. 21 credits in one semester. There is nothing easy about majoring in music, especially music ed, even more difficult when combined with performance.

Another place where music ed students are valued and get the same performance opportunities as performance majors is Westminster Choir College–many students do the double degree there. I’m sure there are many more, check the links violadad suggests, and others may chime in as well. One place you can not get the double degree is NYU Steinhardt–they do not allow double majors in the same department. But there are many places that do. Good luck!
