My daughter is a junior in hs, and is interested in (hopefully) attending a Christian University where she wants to double major or minor in performance, along with a major or minor in some type of ministry or biblical study. ANY suggestions? I don't think a conservatory program would be a good fit, although I really don't know. I haven't been on this discussion before, so if there are previous threads that you can direct me to, that would be great. Her academics are excellent so far, and she has solid experience in Oble/English Horn performance through high school and summer programs.

Im not sure what denomination you are looking for or how conservative a school your daughter is looking for, but I do know that Biola in Southern California has a music school. I can’t vouch personally for its reputation.

You might want to take a peek at Houghton. [Houghton College: Academics](Christ-Centered Academics & General Education).

Wheaton in Illinois as well http://www.wheaton.edu/Conservatory/

Not my bailiwick, but let me see if I can come up with some other options. “Christian” means different things to different people, so perhaps a more specific liturgical/denominational preference or tradition would aid others in offering options.

A couple of possibilities mentioned here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/554514-music-major-out-question.html?highlight=worship+music

and here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/174484-best-school-me-going-into-ministry.html?highlight=worship+music

There are many potential possibilities, which could be significantly narrowed by denominational preference.

Seconding the idea of Houghton, which does have the option of the double-major the OP mentions. Be forewarned, the campus is out in the middle of nowhere and the weather is, well, it’s upstate NY, Great Lakes weather, 'nuff said! I know a couple of kids who have gone there and they are all very happy though, and say that the fellowship on the campus is very close and sweet.

Again, just some names which may or may not be appropriate.

[Music[/url] (Centenary College)
[url=<a href=“Page Not Found | Union University, a Christian College in Tennessee”>Department of Music | Union University, a Christian College in Tennessee]Department of Music | Union University](http://www.centenary.edu/majors/music)
[School of Music - Belmont University](School of Music | Belmont University)
[Music - Meadows School of the Arts - SMU](Areas of Study - Meadows School of the Arts, SMU)
[St. Olaf College | Northfield, Minnesota, USA](http://www.stolaf.edu/depts/music/)

Also look at Furman in SC or Mercer in GA.

In addition to the specific suggests above, you may want to start with your particular denomination/belief sets and look at the church sponsored college offerings and quality of their music depts.

For example, I’ve known fine music students -various instruments/voice - who have seriously explored or attended the following due to faith beliefs - even though the names might not be obvious to the wider world:

North Park University - Chicago - Evangelical Covenant
Washington Adventist University - Maryland
Luther College - Decorah, Iowa
various Concordia Colleges (Lutheran) throughout the US
Nebraska Weslyan - Methodist

None of the above may be appropriate for your faith or instrument. I just intended to point out another approach to researching the problem!

A couple more -
Messiah College (Brethren in Christ) in PA
Sewanee Univ of the South (Episcopal) in TN

Thanks for everyone’s input. We have only begun our search, however, Wheaton College does appear to be a good fit. Especially when we factor in the location (one hour from home!). We haven’t visited yet, but we intend to do so this fall, along with a few other schools in the midwest within weekend driving distance. All of your input is very helpful. Side note: our son is a MT major at Carnegie Mellon, so we’re somewhat familiar with the auditioning/application process. Yikes!! Not sure of the differences in process of the two, but I’ll read more and learn more from this site. Happy Labor Day weekend to all!

Niece and nephew went to Lee University in TN and they have a pretty extensive music program. Had some good scholarships, too.

Here are some other schools in the midwest:

Hope College- Holland, MI- Reformed Church of America
Calvin College- Grand Rapids, MI- Christian Reformed Church

Of the two, Calvin probably maintains the most consistent emphasis on the Christian life, especially across the faculty. Hope College has been known for its vibrant chapel program. Student attendance is not required, yet the chapel is nearly always packed. I’m not intimately familiar, however, with the music program at either school.

Another possibility in Michigan is Spring Arbor University. This is a good school to consider if your daughter is looking for a strong ministry emphasis. Spring Arbor is affiliated with the Free Methodist Church.

As far as finding a good fit, you & your daughter will need to figure out the balance of priorities amongst academic &/or musical selectivity (Wheaton College, IL is probably the most selective of all the Christian schools), desire for a ministry/biblical studies focus, and oboe faculty & ensembles.
