Christopher Newport or Roger Williams

CNU’s campus and the immediate area is very safe. Please don’t rely on strangers unfamiliar with the areas for information.

@VAMom23 I was recommending CNU to OP but based only on crime, CNU certainly had more than the other choice based on their own reporting. And if safety was the very top concern, would you call Newport News a safe place? It’s unlikely for students to spend four years only on campus or the immediate area surrounding.

The area considered “Newport News VA” is very large geographically. Runs from the MMBT to Fort Eustis. You can drive on 664/64 for 20 minutes or more at 70mph and still be running along side Newport News.

Crime in the city tends to be in the SE/East End area (west of 64, south of Mercury) and Denbigh. Trust me when I say you could do 4 years or more at CNU and not go anywhere near those areas.

@Catmatmc It has been a while since I traveled to Newport News for work and clearly we were not in the best area then. Then OP has two safe areas to choice from. Again based on cost, academics liveliness and a lovely campus, I would still choose CNU.

If you are into sailing RW is number one team in US off and on. Dorms overlook beautiful Narragansett bay and it is as safe as you can get. They’ve come a long way and now have a law school on campus. I am not familiar with CNU but It sounds great too. And in a great part of the country and better weather.

I just had dinner tonight at Second Street in Newport News. Glad to be able to report I made it out of Newport News alive!

Well it wasn’t something really dangerous like walking on a beach path.

A few years ago my older sonGC recommended he look at RWU. We visited and thought it made a good impression so my son applied early action. We heard from all his other EA schools before Christmas but heard nothing from RWU. New Years, then MLK came and went and still we heard nothing. I called the GC and she said no one in the school had heard from RWU and she was livid. I called them the last week of January, was only able to speak to a student intern who told us we would hear the following week. Around the 6th of February my son received a rejection. I told my son the rejection was actually a blessing because if the school was unable to live up to its obligation to provide a timely EA response, I’m sure that was the tip of the iceberg of institutional incompetence. Feel it was a bullet dodged.

Newport News is really spread out in terms of good and bad areas. It is kind of misleading to lump them all together.

When comparing costs, please look at the fees. CNU aggregates them all together (I forget the name of the actual fee) and they are very large. That being said, my D is happy there for the moment and has had a great freshman year.
