Hi, everyone! So, I’ve been accepted into Christopher Newport EA last month and took a tour of the campus a couple weeks ago after an interview for the Honors and PLP programs. I was almost all set to commit until I got a “likely postcard” from William and Mary. And since I have some personal connections there, W&M is looking more appealing. I was hoping anyone had any thoughts in which school might be better for me?
W&M is a much better-known school. I can’t imagine why anyone would choose CNU over W&M, unless there is a particular major W&M doesn’t have?
Congrats! W&M has much more recognition on a national level. Pick what you feel is the right fit for you but if you don’t have a strong preference for Christopher Newport, I’d go with W&M.
Any other irons in the fire?
I personally did like CNU’s atmosphere much better, but W&M does have that recognition, like y’all said. As an update, I got into W&M as a William and Mary Scholar (full tuition/fees), and I qualify for the W&M Promise (making more or less a full ride). I have a couple other college options, but can’t say they’re as on the table as these two are. My two majors I want to pursue (Sociology and Philosophy) are at both CNU and W&M, so that’s not a huge problem.
W&M, no brainer. Especially w/ “more or less” full ride.
Congrats on the scholarship, @JPerson17!
William&Mary on full scholarship should be a no brainer - and it’s much better for philosophy/sociology than CNU.
CONGRATULATIONS!! wow, that’s an impressive scholarship.
What is a “likely postcard” from William and Mary??
It was essentially an early notice of my acceptance; unless I my grades took a nosedive between then and them sending out official admission letters, I was getting in. The postcard had a personal note from the admissions officer than reviewed my application.
Know very little about Christopher Newport…
Full ride at William & Mary is outstanding ! Congratulations !
Time to plan for an overnight at W&M: ask about attending a Freshman philosophy seminar and a sociology honors Seminar, chat with current students who got the same scholarship as you…
I am going to W&M in April for their myWM Mondays for admitted students. Is there any possible advice for sitting in on a class?
Update: I have decided to commit to William and Mary this year. Thanks everyone for the comments!
When you sit in on a class, you may want to email the professor and ask for the reading to be done for that day. This way you know what they’re talking about and you might even be able to participate.
