My King of All Procrastinators S just called home to say that he did, indeed, hand in his last paper at 4:59 p.m.(5 p.m. deadline of course) and had just come back from dinner at Sharples. He described the dinner offered as "Get The H*ll Out Bar." I told him that I trusted that that was not the official dinner menu name, and he said that was what the last dinner was commonly known as on campus. No vegetarian dedicated line. Basically only vegetables prepared every imaginable way!

My son came home and then submitted his Philosophy paper on Saturday...from the comfort of his (very messy) room after bitterly complaining that Swat is the only place that makes you write a paper AFTER the final exams.

heh. They were definitely lacking vegetarian lines several days before the official closing of Swat, probably as early as Tues. or Wed. of last week. Oh, man... I stayed over Thanksgiving and had to eat a few Sharples meals. They basically had one bar per meal, plus the salad and condiments stuf. Sad, sad Sharples.

I had a friend who went home to Boston, and submitted his final exam paper on Sunday night.

achat,
Oh, we have had those papers submitted from the comfort(?) of our room atthe lastpossibleminutemoments. I was actually very happy that S stayed at Swat until the very end this time and wrote his four papers while there. I still cannot bear to watch his incredible facility for procrastination, even after all these years. And my S's comment to yours is to read the syllabus very carefully if you want to avoid those nasty paper following the final exam courses!

gphoenix-your Boston friend wins the procrastination prize this semester.

Point taken. I'll tell him... :)

For all the complaining, though, he still thinks he is at the best college in America and is getting the best education.

Not even close. My D rattled off at least three friends who were sending in papers from home.

Knock on wood, she was in momof3son's camp: makes her travel plans for the last day and turns in all the stuff before coming home.

I-Dad,
Hmm, and here I thought that everything had to be in by the close of the last final exam on Saturday. My S better not find out about this or he will be asking for more extensions!

I'm with both Interesteddad and momof3sons......My son turned in his last paper at 4:56 (so I guess momof3sons' S has him beat), always makes his plane reservations for the last plane on Sat. so he has until the bitter end to get things done, and would also be asking for extensions if he knew he could turn things in after finals end.

Give your boys more credit. They know that they could get extensions into the Christmas break.

They are probably like my daughter:

"How was your history paper?"

"Well, it's done and that's the most important thing!"

hahah, i def think it's funny how many people get extensions and how easily they're given out. i went to a pretty traditional high school and a lot of the emphasis was on following directions and having correct grammar/mechanics and meeting deadlines. i love how at swat the focus is almost all on content and ideas and profs really are flexible about everything else

I always thought procrastinating was impossible at Swarthmore, especially with the heavy workload that students have there, supposedly. But I guess it's possible to put off work and catch up later in the semester, or after it, with some coddling and flexibility from profs.

Procrastinating is impossible at Swarthmore without falling far behind. Most of the papers we are talking about here were due on Saturday and were emailed on Saturday. I don't know if extensions were given....at least not that my son knows about. See momof3son's post, everything has to be in by end of day Saturday.
