Does anyone know of any Christian churches around UNC? Since I was a little kid, I’ve been going to church almost every Sunday that I can and I would like to continue that when I attend UNC. Oh, and also, please only mention the churches that aren’t like the Westboro Baptist Church e_e
Thanks in advance!
Besides several kinds of campus ministries, there are dozens of churches in the town. If you narrow down your preferences (conservative? progressive? Bible-literal? social activist? megachurch?) those of us familiar with Chapel Hill can provide better guidance. Or if there’s a denomination you already like. Also let us know how far from campus you consider “around.” Walking distance only?
Oh, sorry I wasn’t more specific. Are there any churches you know of that are more progressive and either within walking distance or easily reachable in like 10 minutes from the campus?
Great, that helps narrow things down. If you haven’t settled on a denomination, you’ll likely want to try a few and see what feels friendliest and most soul-nourishing. You might want to look at their websites and see what they have to say about campus ministries (hint, you’ll be more than welcome at any church I know of). Here are a few to get started on:
Mainstream Protestant churches right on Franklin Street, that is, practically on campus:
University Presbyterian: http://holytrinitychapelhill.org/
University United Methodist: http://www.chapelhilluumc.org/
Chapel of the Cross (Episcopal): https://thechapelofthecross.org/
(on Rosemary Street) Holy Trinity Lutheran: http://holytrinitychapelhill.org/
At the edges of campus, but an easy walk, two very progressive congregations:
Friends (Quaker): http://www.chapelhillfriends.org/
Community Church (UU): http://www.c3huu.org/
And a couple miles north of campus, but extremely welcoming to students/young adults:
United Church of Chapel Hill: http://unitedchurch.org/
There are so many more, but these are some “majors” that come to mind right now.
Best wishes to you.
Wow thank you so much! Next time I visit UNC before I attend, I’ll check out the United Church of Chapel Hill first because I want an environment that still has young adults around my age. Once again, thank you for your advice and information!
Hey there! I’m a current freshman at UNC, and I play on the praise band at The Summit Church in Chapel Hill. Summit is a very modern, contemporary Christian church that hundreds of UNC students attend. It’s a car ride away from campus, but there’s a network of upperclassmen that give rides to underclassmen every Sunday; that’s how I get there.
There are also countless Christian organizations on campus that meet during the week, such as Cru, which meets every Thursday night. There are also small group Bible studies that meet every week in each dorm through Cru. Lots of ways for Christians to get plugged in on campus!!! Hope to see you around next year!
Oh sweet, thank you! I’ll keep your church in mind for when I visit and attend UNC.
@jollymama (or anyone else): What do you know about the University UMC on Franklin Street – size/nature of the congregation, attendance by university students, activities/Sunday school groups for college-aged people?
