Hey everyone, there isn't much information online about this program and I was wondering if anyone else here was applying.
How competitive is the program?

This thread is a bit old, but I am very curious about this too. Anybody know anything about this?

I’m probably going to apply when the application comes out (in April; the program itself will be two weeks in August.) Basically its a full scholarship to Korea for two weeks, and you do a bunch of cultural activities. If you look on a few other forums alumni have posted more information about it.

I was wondering more about how hard it is to get into the program and what kind of applicants they are looking for (:

From the other forums, it looks like they look for a well-rounded applicant who is very interested in learning about Korean culture (and hasn’t been exposed to it yet.) I’ve heard that they’ve gotten 1000 applicants, and they choose 100.

All righty (: Thanks!

Last summer, the niece of a Korean family friend came to the US (only for the summer) and I tutored her in English 15 hrs/week for 3 weeks, and she really got me interested in Korean culture. Would this be a plus?

You could certainly talk about that in your essays! That seems like a great talking point!

Cool, thank you!

So there are still several months left before the application process will begin?

That’s what it looks like, if the application isn’t even released until April. Extra time to plan the summer!

Well I would say that it gives less time to plan, granted that we do not know for sure if we will be accepted :/

I guess thats true. Idk about you, but for me most things don’t seem to happen in August, except for very early august.

Exactly!! That is why this program is perfect: not only does it provide an existential experience, but it fills that annoying gap that i can never seem to fill with program :D

Hey everyone! I attended the South Korea Scholarship Program in the Summer of 2010 and it was truly a phenomenal experience! Definitely do not hesitate to apply. You will not find out if you got in until mid-june, so you have to be ok without advance planning. When I applied they had about 500 applicants to fill 100 spots, so it is competitive but not impossible to get into. Your probably right, yhbultimate11, that there have been more applicants in recent years. I would say the most important things to showcase in your application is that you have a genuine interest in Korean culture and travel/being exposed to new experiences in general. If you seem curious, respectful and motivated that should be a plus. Feel free to ask me any questions about the program or application process. Or PM me if you prefer. Good Luck to you guys!!! I hope you will end up applying!

So wait, what’s the website for this? And the application comes out in april for a program that year in august? I am so confused.

[CIEE South Korea Scholarship Program](http://www.ciee.org/southkorea/high-school/index.html)

Yes, the application comes out in April and the program is in August.

the application is released in April. I believe the deadline is some time in early May and they let you know of your acceptance about 6 weeks later. Here’s the website: [CIEE South Korea Scholarship Program](http://www.ciee.org/southkorea/high-school/index.html)

Hello everyone! I also hope to apply for this program when the application comes out. There are hardly any active threads about CIEE. For those that have already gone with CIEE high school program, what do you feel made your application stand out?

Also, for anyone who has applied, is a teacher recommendation required?

torihome, It’s great that you are planning to apply! In my app I wrote about my interest in political science and international relations. I also spoke about my interest in Korean arts (dance, theatre etc.) and why that made me want to visit. I had VERY little exposure to Korean culture beforehand so I tried to convey that I would be curious, adventurous and respectful if chosen for the opportunity. No matter what you choose to write about I think it is key that you convey that in some way. Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions!

yhbultimate11, yes you do need a teacher rec. It is very short. About a page and handwritten. I actually read mine and scanned it in along with my application.
