This is my first post on college confidential though I've been reading threads on here for a while now...

Anyway, I recently read through the entirety of the NSLI-Y Program. thread (60+ pages, I know, I'm crazy) and since the date has already passed for this year, I started looking at other summer programs that would give me the chance to study abroad over the summer and possibly introduce me to a new language- and it had to be free (because my parents could never afford to send me on one of those $5000+ trips). So I saw that someone on there had posted about this program in South Korea through an organization called CIEE, and I have now become very interested in it. Their website is sort of helpful, but it doesn't contain information pertinent to my summer planning such as when the registration date is (other than the occasional ambiguous "sometime in April" statement)--and consequently when the acceptance/rejections are sent out--nor does it give me a clear sense of what the program is really like.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone that's gone through the process of applying has some insight into a slightly more specific timeline, what the experience is like, if you felt like it was "worth it", and if you have any idea how competitive it is to get one of these scholarships.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

I dont know if anyone is interested, but if you’re applying for this scholarship and have any quick questions you’d like to ask past alumni or CIEE hopefuls join our facebook group and we can be of some help (alumnis and anyone interested welcome!)

I have no idea how competitive the scholarship is for your program. I have been on exchange with CIEE and it has been a great experience. From what I have gathered through working with them it is not as large as other companys so there might not be as many people applying.

I was rejected, for the second time. I think I must really really need to work on my essay. Dang it I’d really like to know what I need to improve on specifiically

I got waitlisted (basically a rejection however i still have a slight chance if someone drops out before their plane ticket is bought) but i plan on asking what set me back from the other 100 accepted. Also remember this year they had a lot more people than originally expected so it was a tougher decision.

I was accepted as well. Check out finalists Facebook page. Thank you Collegeconfidential! This website is the reason I learned about the program.
