Which colleges have the most/fewest cigarette smokers? Does this follow any trends according to the demographics (sex, race, religion, income) or types of students ("hipsters", art students, internationals, pre-med students, high percentage of athletes, high percentage of students from tobacco producing states, etc.) or according to smoking policies on and off campus (indoor bans, taxes, etc.)?

i go to a school full of hipsters. everyone* smokes. it’s how you make friends.

*ok so not really everyone, but when you’re a nonsmoker it feels like you’re the only one.

Don’t take up smoking… I mean it’s your life, do what you want, but don’t take it up. Especially not just to fit in. Quitting is a *****. I wasn’t addicted enough that I got physically sick, but I was addicted enough that I relapsed quite a few times before I finally put them away for good. All that remains is my Zippo lighter (great for lighting the fireplace!).

I’d say try one just to see how hard it is to even get accustomed to smoking, but I know first hand that one can lead to another and before you know it you’re getting a pack every week or two.

DCHurricane, congratulations on quitting!
Egolikestomach, where do you go to school?
Anyone else out there: how many students smoke at the colleges that you attend and do you think that there are any trends to this?

hardly anyone at my school smokes cigarettes

At the school I was at last semester I’d say it was about 20-30%. Most people didn’t smoke, but you’d see the occasional smoker walking along campus or outside of a dorm. You’d see a lot more smokers at parties, but that’s because most smokers are also partiers.

It was a pretty smoker-friendly campus though. Lots of ashtrays everywhere and I only ever had two people lecture me on the dangers of smoking. Never had anyone do those stupid fake coughs.

At my school, I would say about 1 out of 5 smokes daily while a little more than 3 out of 5 smoke occasionally (mostly whenever they are drinking). Most people think it’s a personal decision and don’t care if you are doing it or not as long as you don’t try to pressure them to smoke.

A lot of my friends go to a liberal arts school where everyone smokes. One friend told me he thought it was strange to not smoke at that school.

So, we have the following:
Pomona: very low smoking rate
Alabama: 20% smokers

Posters, please name your schools! This is actually very helpful for people to know this information.

I smoke once in a while. I’m not getting hooked tho bc i only smoke once in a while. Idk i feel like its a good way to deal with stress of college but I realize that its bad for me so there is no way i would get hooked (I’m not paying $7 a pack either every week). I smoke and realize its stupid but i still do it once in a while.

i go to a small private lac in new york city and i feel like the sitch is about the same here as it is at other small private lacs.

for the record i’m a ~social smoker~ and i bought my first pack ever the other night. UGH. $9.50 down the drain.

I go to Cal Poly Slo. Some people smoke, not too many.

I smoke, but not cigarettes, my pipe is cheaper and less offensive.

It definitely depends on the people you hang out with. I agree with pramirez about AL, but if you hang out with the certain types of people already mentioned, it seems like a lot more.

At Purdue a lot of kids smoke. Thats why there are a lot of cigarette butt stands around campus. Good amount of cigar fans too

JWU almost everyone smokes. Everywhere you go, theres a group of smokers outside…

Egolikestomach, what is the name of your school?
Primarez, what is the name of the LAC where your friends go?
Does anyone else go to a LAC with a low smoking rate?

what the hell is with LACs and smoking?

I should probably clarify my previous statement. Hardly anyone I know smokes cigarettes, but some (maybe 5-10%) smoke other substances (namely pot or hookah).

At Emory the Koreans smoke.

At Michigan rarely does anyone smoke. The last time i saw a smoker was this korean guy …

Thanks for your question, DCHurricane. Are there any LACs out there (besides Pomona) with low smoking rates?

At BC, the only people whom I have ever noticed smoking are the Korean students chilling outside the library… I do see lone smokers here and there, but only the Koreans smoke in a pack.

I would say that smoking is relatively uncommon here.
