Hi everyone,

I'm applying to the University of Cincinnati, and have been invited to participate in their Cincinnatus Scholarship Program. Apparently, this entails traveling to an on-campus "competition" in February. In order to do so, I'd have to miss my All-State Orchestra convention, which I really don't want to do, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it.

I know that they give out about 100 6k awards, and a smaller number of full-tuition awards, but the official UC website is maddeningly vague about what the judging criteria are. I know that you have to submit a portfolio of ECs beforehand, but I have no clue what happens at the on-campus event. Is it a series of interviews? An applicant boxing match? What?

I've got a 3.6 GPA, 31 ACT, 2080 SAT. I'm VP of my school's Tri-M Music Honor Society and I do a fair bit of community service with Key Club. Help me, College Confidential! Should I go?

There are about 100 6k awards, true, and about 10 full scholarships. It is an essay competition followed by team building activities. I got a note today that there will also be various departments there to answer questions/give presentations. It really depends on how badly you want to go to UC. Is it a safety? First choice?

An essay competition, huh? So you submit an essay prior to going? I wonder why I haven’t seen that in any of the Cincinnatus info/material. This whole thing seems very strange.

If I’m accepted into the College-Conservatory of Music, then it will be one of my top choices.

Thanks for your reply!

Bump. Still confused.

My D was in your shoes 2 years ago. Even though she didn’t go to the competition, she was given the option to accept a $2000/yr Cincinnatus scholarship and an additional $3000 per year because she is out of state. I’m not sure how they are handling it this year, but I know there has been some discussion of Cincinnatus on the University of Cincinnati forum. My D is at CCM and loves it! Good luck.

My son is going tomorrow. If you are invited to go and you decline, you get a $2000 scholarship per year. If you go, you are guaranteed minimum of $3500 per year and can get up to a full scholarship to cover tuition, room and board, and books (if you are out of state, they add $3000 to the awards). The day includes writing an essay that day plus different team building events and these items are part of what goes into the judging for the awards. I hope this helps.

I was wondering what the requirements are for being ask to go? My ds was invited- he has a 4.3 weighted gpa, scored a 33 on the ACT. His girlfriend is a junior and really wants to go to U of Cinci. Her mom said she has a 3.6- hasn’t taken the ACT yet. What does she need to be invited?
