Anyone have any personal experience with the Cinema Studies department or any insights they can share? I'm deciding now basically between Columbia and Penn and while I know Columbia is stronger in film, I like Penn so much in general that if it has a nice department I might lean towards it regardless.

Penn has a vigorous interdisciplinary Cinema Studies Program, with numerous weekly screenings, guest speakers, and other on-campus events, and a relatively large community interested in cinema. Additionally, opportunities for summer internships in large and indy production companies seem to be fairly plentiful, and Penn has a significant number of alumni working at all levels of the film industry.

Be sure to thoroughly explore the Cinema Studies Program web site (including courses, events, etc.):

Also, if you contact the Program office, I’m confident that they’d put you in touch with folks who could answer any other questions you might have (current majors, faculty, etc.).

My recommendation? Go to the school which, overall, you like better and at which you feel you’ll best thrive throughout your 4-year college experience.

Good luck, and congratulations!

Thank you very much!
