Cinemas near UT

Are there any MAINSTREAM cinemas near UT?

It seems the nearest is Dobie Theatre which only shows "independent and art films"

My grandfather and I have a running joke about this...there isn't a regular movie theater within walking distance of UT and we said we should open a movie theater and we'd make millions. Really it's completely absurd if you think about it. The closest ones are on I-35 or there's an Alamo Drafthouse somewhere north of campus.

Razr,

Here's a link to Austin 360's listing of movie theatres:

<a href="http://www.austin360.com/movies/content/movies/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.austin360.com/movies/content/movies/index.html</a></p>

You can also search for a particular movie at that website. For instance, here's a link to today's show times and locations for "Snakes on a Plane":

<a href="http://www.austin360.com/movies/cgi/cim/cgi-bin/movies/movie_search.cgi%5B/url%5D">http://www.austin360.com/movies/cgi/cim/cgi-bin/movies/movie_search.cgi</a></p>

Snakes on a Plane...yep, that's exactly what I wanted to watch.

you've gotta visit alamo drafthouse, it's a great place for dinner and a movie.

I second that. Drafthouse is rated one of the top cinemas in the country (if not the top). It's not too far from campus, just head South on Lamar.

100 son.

The Drafthouse doesn't seem to show the movies I want to watch either.....(Snakes on a Plane & the Illusionist)

Maybe I'm wrong, if so please correct me.

If not, where is the nearest cinema?

Sorry, Razr, I couldn't find The Illusionist. I don't think it's playing in Austin, or at least not at the major theatres.

why do you want to see snakes on a plane?
what is the point of the movie? the plot sounds extremely idiotic? and how realistic is it? Even sci-fi freaks have to think this is ridiculuos

Snakes on a plane looks retarded. I can see Samuel L. Jackson just yelling "There's a snake ***** get down!"

If you cant find movies at drafthouse, try going to Barton Creek Square Mall...between the theater in the mall and the theater next to the mall they have just about every big movie playing.

Thanks for all the help, I realized I was looking at the wrong alamo drafthouse....

"I'm getting sick and tired of these mother fing snakes on this mother fing plane!" - Samuel L. Jackson

I saw this movie...completely ridiculous.

Snakes On A Plane was pretty damn funny, I mean you have to go into it realizing it's going to be a ridiculous movie that's going to be bad. It's kind of similar to all those B-Rated movies that have massive cult followings, it's either something you understand or you don't.

Now, onto movie theaters.

Dobie Theater actually shows great movies, but yeah -- they're indie movies.

The two theaters in Austin I use often are Alamo at South Lamar and The Regal (I think that's what it's called) It's right next to central market. Barton Springs/Creek has a movie theater too, it's supposed to be nice.

None of these theaters are walking distance. If you live at a dorm chances are you can make friends with someone who has a car. Really, you SHOULD make friends with someone who has a car. But also you can take the a yellow cab to the movie, I've used cabs in Austin a lot, they're pretty convenient for some things but they can be pricy, if you have a few friends to take with you though the cost will be split and then isn't such a big deal.

Sorry, but which is the NEAREST cinema?

Thanks.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - South Lamar
1120 South Lamar, Austin, TX - (512) 476-1320

Galaxy Highland Cinema 10
6700 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, TX - (512) 467-7305
-Probably the closest, it's by highland mall, pretty ghetto.

Regal Westgate 11
4477 South Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX - (800) 326-3264 x369

Alamo and Regal are relatively close to each other. These would be the 'NEAREST' cinemas.
