I'm applying as a transfer to Digital Art and Animation, but Critical Studies is my second choice. I really want Animation and think I've written a good Personal Statement, but I need one for Crit Studies also, should I submit the same one or write a second one? If I write a second one wouldn't I technically be lying in one of them by default since I clearly want one over the other but I'm not exactly going to write in the essay for my second choice that it isn't what I really want..

Thanks.

The personal statement gives you a chance to “talk” directly to the SCA faculty reader in that particular major. It is always better to write a specific statement (which is meant to show your passion for that area) for each major.

If you have an authentic passion for the second choice (crit studies), point out exactly what and why. For instance, since you are applying for Animation, perhaps in the statement for Crit Studies you could focus on your appreciation for animation features and shorts (or?) by a certain artist or artists. Your deep interest in studying her/him and those like them are driving you to pursue crit studies. I would imagine some of the things you wrote in your Animation statement would fit perfectly, but you would direct this one towards studying the work of others and how this genre has affected you in your life.

However, if you are not at all interested in studying films, and you really have no authentic interest in this major, perhaps that is a good reason to reconsider your application to it.

Best of luck.

Thanks so much for the info, I’ll do my best on a second essay.
