Ok so I need to buy a cell phone to bring to Kenyon but I don't know which to choose. I read on the posts from last year that Cingular was supposedly building a new cell tower. The Collegian said it would be atop the Gambier water tower. Does anyone know if this was ever completed? Which service has the best signal on campus? Which service is the most used?

both cingular and verizon work but I think verizon has better coverage

I've heard rumblings on campus that since the new tower went up, Cingular has the best coverage. But, Verizon is still very very reliable and most people seem to be on Verizon (meaning you'll save on your cell phone bill!).

what about sprint?

chose Verizon! It's cheaper and reliable. My Verizon serviced worked very well when D and I visited in December '06.

Verizon gets much better reception, especially indoors. Also, a lot more people are on Verizon so most of your calls are free.

when i was there over the summer, my cell didnt work and i have cingular.

The tower wasn't built this summer, Nicole. It is now and reception is just as good as Verizon.

The tower was finished early December. Cingular definitely has way better coverage on campus, but the majority of the students use Verizon. If you're going to be calling a bunch of people on campus, get Verizon, but, be aware, that we don't use are cellphones much at Kenyon, especially to talk to other people who are nearby. In the end, it doesn't really matter.

yeah, does sprint work? i am not a huge cell phone user, but i will need to make some calls.

no sprint doesn't work.

Both Cingular and Verizon work reliably well and Verizon's service has gotten much better since the cell tower was built last year. These two providers are definitely the ones to choose from, although Skype is another great option for calling home if you really want to cut down on the phone bill.
