<p>I didn't know what I wanted to do when I got into college so I told the advisor I just want something that deals with computer software, programming/coding, etc. Turns out the whole time I have been doing CIS since I noticed I was taking accouning and business classes. I am going to be done with the associates next year and plan to transfer to citycny to do CS. Now the main issue. I got accepted to Baruch in NYC and I have registeted to continue my education over there. I would like to know if I am better off staying at my current college, get my associates, then transfer to a 4 year and start CS. Or transfer to Baruch now without being done with the assosiates, and continue CIS over there. Now to the actual question, what am I missing from CS if I do CIS? Will guides outside school (videos, websites, youtube, etc) teach me as much as I need to know to be as skilled as someone that majored in CS? Do I really need all those Calculus and physics classes to be as skilled as a CS graduate? If there are any ups and downs or advantages over the others please let me know. I'm sorry for the long post but I do not know what to do. Rejecting Baruch is serious. I might not be accepted again if later on I actually wanna do CIS instead of CS. I have to decide within this month. I am registeted at both colleges and gonna drop either after I decide whete to go.</p>
The choice of CIS vs CS depends on what you want to do. CIS is mostly for people aiming for a IT job or a consultant. Your basically dealing and learn about how to use systems to handle various task. CS is for creating this systems. You’ll basically learn more about the theory, fundamentals, and programing.
It really boils down to what you want to do in your career.
In reality you don’t need to go to college to learn programming. If you want to learn coding you should start now. They’re many websites and videos to start from.
It isn’t hard to get into Baruch despite what their acceptance rate is, I wouldn’t stress it too much if you do not go. Chances are you can go to Baruch when ever you want (assuming you apply early enough after every semester).
I would stick with community college so you have more time to pick between CIS or CS. If you want to do CIS toward the end of your last semester, you can just go back to Baruch.
You can learn CS without going to school if you want, but it has to become a hobby of yours, it’s not something you’re casually going to learn. It also takes years of practice to be good at programing (assuming that is what you want to do). From my experience, CS knowledge/major is more useful than CIS, but CIS is still viable.
Really comes down to what you want to do. Personally, I’d finish my associates, and then make a decision (if I had to chose between the two majors, I would go for CS by the way).
