Citations are quite an honor… the type of thing to go to the best one or two students in the giant lecture class.

Aside from this, there are three honor lists:
Top 5%: Rufus Choate scholars
Top 15%: Next highest honor list
Top 35%: Next highest honor list after that

I recall reading sometime during my time at D that there were ~1000 citations given per year. Considering 4200 students x 3 classes x 3 terms, and you’ve got students taking ~38,000 courses/year. So citations are given roughly 1 time per 38 classes taken.

Congratulations! A professor at an Ivy League institution- one of the top colleges in the country- thought your son/daughter was worthy of individual recognition in his class. It doesn’t get much better than this.

They are quite an honor and I can think of a handful of '12’s who have received them this year. I can only imagine receiving one in my time here. I was happy enough to receive my first solid A (I used to be a straight A student for most of HS…) winter term.

They are given out in smaller classes as well. I know kids who have gotten citations in seminars and Writing 5’s
