City College- CUNY System??

What do people think about City College for an Undergrad in Electrical Engineering or City college in general. People usually look down on CUNY but I got an acceptance for City and there is even a mandatory examination we have to take in order to be admitted after our regular acceptance. What are people's thoughts on this??

City College used to be known as "the Poor Man's Harvard," where indigent immigrants and foreigners of exceptional intellectual promise and ability had pursued their studies. Tragically, it's declined significantly over the years, to the extent that it's a shell of what it once was.

What are your other options?

Well I did get into Stony Brook, NYU-Poly, Drexel and awaiting some other responses soon. For now I just want to have some place to really fall back on or have in mind if anything happens.

I would politely disagree with kwu on City College. Definitely the most competitive in the CUNY system, it may have had a slide in the go-go 80s, but has rightfully been returning to its heyday level as the economy has tanked.

And now, they actually have --- ready for this? --- DORMS!!!

Engineering is what they've always been known for, in addition to getting the best and the brightest (and the most frugal) from NYC.

Good luck AML. You did very well. :)

I think City is respected locally, along the lines of Poly-NYU. I would compare the costs of attending the schools you are considering bc they all seem to be about the same from a reputation standpoint. Congrats!

I agree with Heyalb. CUNY and City College are very different today than in the 1980s. CUNY competes for the top high school graduates. Sure, talented college-bound kids head for the Ivy Leagues, etc. if they can get admitted. But sharp kids who end up at CUNY these days don't regret it. I gather that the ratio of recent CUNY alumni admitted to grad schools, law and med is relatively high. The top alumni from CUNY do well anywhere and everywhere.

I concur to College Yahoo`s opinion on the local reputation. I am living in NYC, and quite frankly, City College is respected here and its engineering program is pretty good. NYU-Poly also is a quite good school. But the reputation of the last one is very insignificant if you cross the Northeast edge, which is of course debatable.

I visited NYU-Poly but not City college. My cousin graduated from city though but you really have to stand out from you graduation class if you`re seeking top graduate schools.

Anyway congrats!

CUNY has pretty good honors programs.
