City college student trying to Transfer to UC

i am currently in my 4th year at a community college. my original plan was to transfer to CAL as a mass comm. major. My major prep work was in social classes. i got very good grades for my first 2 years, GPA-3.8. Eventually i gained interest in the science majors and decided to go for a science major, with the intent to go to med school. The next couple of semester were spent doing pre rec's for the higher transferable science courses. I've gotten C's in most of the core subjects required for admission. I'm pretty sure i can't transfer into a UC with a science based major. Looking at the bigger picture i hope to transfer to Cal with a psych. major and later on apply to med school. Looking at the pre rec's for pysch. at Cal i basically have all A's and B's with the exception of Bio 101A and 101B ( got a C for both), but i took another science class that satisfied that requirement and got an A ( anat. 14). My GPA for the core subjects ( for the pych. major) is above a 3.5, probably more if they don't count the C's i got for bio. My strength grade wise, really does show in the social sciences, but my overall GPA is about a 3.2 because of all the science courses. Also all my social science classes were taken about 2 years ago. My only concern is that admissions will see that my grade trend is downhill. I also have too many units to transfer. i am concerned when they look at my overall GPA they will only take the most recent 60 units, which includes all my C's in the science courses. does anybody know how heavy CAL or any other UC weighs in with courses outside of the intended major?

CAL definantly weighs in the grade trend along with UCLA, I don’t really know about all the other UC’s. It is not at all good that your grade trend is downhill and also the fact that you’ve accumulated a lot of units. I think I read on the brochure for CAL that students who have accumulated more than 80 semester units after being at a post secondary institution for two years may harm admissions decision. Same went with UCLA.

There is something you need to understand because you’re applying as a transfer.

The transfer admissions for UCs is largely based on gpa, completion of lower division/pre-reqs.

WHAT is more important to you, major or school? Because if your goal is Cal, then play the game, look at the acceptance rates per major and gpa. IF you fall in the average gpa or above average gpa, you’re going to get in assuming the acceptance rate is above 50 percent for that major. IE look at philosophy.

now when you’re looking at applying as a psych major, science major or anything that WILL BE IMPACTED at CAL, then don’t be shocked when you get a rejection, because you are competing against people who will have higher gpas, and better grades, for very few spots(reason why some of those majors have a less than 30 percent acceptance rate).

IF your goal in the end is medical school, REALIZE that you don’t need to major in anything that leads you to medical school, you DO however have to have the pre-reqs for medical school which could be done on the side. You could major in french literature and still get into medical school(provided you have the prereqs for medical school done).

NOW if CAL isn’t important, and you just want to learn, then don’t raise your hopes on cal, and apply as a science or psych major to UCR, i’m pretty sure you’ll be able to study and learn what you love.
