City College Towers

I am transferring to City College of New York in Fall. I am thinking of living into Towers. I haven't been there yet. I would like to gather some informations and hear experiences from this place. What are the prices? Quality of living? Is it too far away from the college, what is the neighborhood like, and so on and so on... Thanks.

The neighborhood is Hamilton Heights, in northern Manhattan.

From what I gather (never actually went to CCNY though I would like to), they have a shuttle bus from the campus to the towers. Even though you COULD walk, the crime is terrible, and it’s not uncommon for something to happen to a young student walking home at night. The Towers aren’t ridiculously expensive for college housing, but I hear the quality isn’t too great.

ive actually heard that the quality is pretty good cuz the towers are new. but yeah the safety is what scares me too. it’s probably the main thing thats making me hesitant about going to macaulay through ccny

I don’t know anything about the Towers themselves, but I lived in the next neighborhood over (and am still a part-time resident - I work in PA but return to the city on weekends). City College is in Harlem; a small part of Harlem is sometimes called Hamilton Heights.

The Towers are located on W. 130th St and City College’s campus ranges from W. 130th to W. 140th from Amsterdam to St. Nicholas. The crime is not so terrible that you would need to take a shuttle bus 5 blocks to campus. The Towers are actually open to any undergraduate students in NYC (I think they give first priority to CCNY students and CUNY students, though), so the shuttle is probably more for them. I would say it is actually pretty uncommon for something to happen to a young student walking home at night - I have walked home at all hours of the night in Harlem/Hamilton Heights (often drunk) with nothing happening to me, and I have lots of friends who live up there and they’re fine. I’m not saying it’s the best or safest neighborhood in New York, but lots of people live their every day lives up there without getting robbed or knifed or whatever.

There are a lot of college and graduate students in this neighborhood because of Columbia, UTS, JTS, MSM, CCNY, and CUMC and Yeshiva to the north. Hamilton Heights has actually been a middle-class neighborhood since the 1970s, and I have a couple of professors who I know live there. There are also a lot of artists and young professionals moving in and changing the character of the neighborhood, too. Lots of pretty parks like Riverbank State Park, St. Nicholas Park and Jackie Robinson Park. The CCNY campus is really gorgeous, too.
