So I have narrowed down my college choices to CUNY City College, SUNY Stony Brook or Polytechnic Institute of NYU. I am currently still on the waiting list for Macaulay Honors College at City College, but if I had been accepted for this then it probably would have been my top choice. On the other hand, I got accepted into the honors program at City College while still being wait listed for the honors college.

I plan on majoring in computer science, but I am not sure if my interests will change to some other type of computer major such as computer engineering, software engineering, etc. But I wanted some input on which one of these 3 colleges has the better computer science program? Which is a better overall college? Which college is more prestigious? etc. Also, I live in NYC and plan on commuting if I go to City College or Polytech, but dorming if I go to Stony Brook.

I didn’t get into Macaulay and I applied this year too -___-
Joking aside, I think you should probably go to NYU Poly UNLESS you get the Macaulay Honors scholarship. Would you be in a lot of debt if you went to NYU Poly?

Stony Brook has the best CS department out of the three schools you mentioned. It is also the best university overall. Plus, you will be paying a much lower tuition. It is a much deal financially and I strongly believe you will get a better education too.

It will also be easier for you to switch to other majors in case if you find out that CS or engineering is not the right field for you. In my opinion, it is a much better choice than NYU Poly.

Actually, I thought about this a little longer, and I agree with Sharp Tech in terms of the flexibility that Stony Brook would have if you didn’t want to do CS. Stony Brook also has a really great CS program, but you couldn’t go wrong with your other choices.
Also, look at the thread I started as well…

Thanks for the replies. I did a little more research and also found Stony Brook to be the best overall and comp sci school out of those 3, but I am still not sure if I want to go there. City College would probably end up being free for me. Poly will probably cost me $9k a year if I don’t take out any loans. (Not planning on dorming at Poly) And Stony Brook would cost me also about $9k without loans but including campus housing.

As for switching majors, I probably won’t be switching. But even if I decide not to do computer science, it will still be some other computer/engineering major that Poly would still have.
