city colleges with strong academics?

For large merit scholarships, you may want to look at these lists:

Take a good long look at UPitt - your stats could get significant merit with a strong bioE program that offers lots of research opportunities as an undergrad. NIH funding is huge (FY’13 $318MM) which allows undergrads to get involved early. I have 2 at Pitt for engineering now, one ChemE, one BioE. CMU was also mentioned which my dd also considered - but their BioE program is a double major with ChemE and not a stand-alone major and also, for finaid, they will only guarantee to meet need if you apply ED. Basically, there was a gap of 10K between our demonstrated need and what they would provide finaid for since dd applied RD. http://report.nih.gov/award/index.cfm?ot=DH,27,47,4,52,64,10000,MS,20,16,6,13,10,49,53,86,OTHDH,RI&fy=2013&state=&ic=&fm=&orgid=&distr=&rfa=&om=n&pid=

The St. George Campus at the University of Toronto is in downtown Toronto if you are interested. I really can’t think of anymore elite American urban schools (downtown in big cities) that have not been mentioned, although of the schools mentioned if you could get in I would think Columbia would be awesome for you since it is in New York. Still, getting into an ivy league is always a reach.

Warbler, LA may have trains but they don’t have subways.

This must be a new improved LA. I still remember my wife being stuck in a traffic jam heading to Redondo Beach to meet her brother with our two girls screaming in the car. She got off the freeway after three hours to wait.

LA has 2 subway lines actually along with 4 light rail lines.

Ah, I stand corrected. The Red line was just going in when we left Southern California and didn’t have any underground segments.

Northeastern University in Boston would be a good choice.
