For all of you who made it to 2nd round, congrats. Basically, what happens now is that you have to contact the researchers on the list (the people you are interested in of course).

The first 50 people who find a mentor (by mutual agreement) get funding and officially make it into the program.

I would hurry on the contacts because many people (including myself) have already found a mentor!

The letter I got said specifically only to email the researchers you have a strong interest in mentoring under … so I would assume no more than 5-10, depending on how diverse your interests are.

Hoping one of these leads will pan out … email did say at least a few of them were open.

@shadowyams
do u by chance have the list of open positions? If so can you send them to me?
the people i contacted said that they have already picked their students
thanks

@Chuckpatel There isn’t a list of open positions. And I doubt that the coordinators of the program would identify the investigators who are still willing to host a summer student. You just have to keep emailing until you receive a positive response. I wish you the best of luck in finding a position!

@Shadowyams Good luck!! And don’t stress too much!

I personally emailed about 7 people, all of whom had interesting research going on. The email returns are a bit on the low end, so anticipate that and email more than one mentor!

For now, I only know that the ball is rolling and that 50 spots are filling up quickly. To be safe, I would hurry and find a mentor within this next week.

Also, I visited CoH today and it is beautiful! The labs are up to date, faculty and staff very knowledgeable and friendly, and the surrounding environment inspiring (and scenic). Definitely a great place to be this summer.

As for housing, be ready to check around Duarte for houses available for renting. Expect a premium on the rent since the renting term will only be for 2 months.

Also, I support the facebook group idea once the final decisions roll in. Good luck all.

8 emails! One negative, one “we’ve got a few applicants, we’ll let you know next week”.

Everyone’s research seems awesome. ^^ And I saw the picture they have on their about page, which is very scenic; looks more like a park than a research center. :P

To those who’ve received official acceptances, do you know how long it’ll take to reach the “mutual agreement”? I also got caught up in that snail mail lag, but now I’ve found a potential mentor…I just hope to make it in time for one of the slots! :)

Hey guys when u had ur interviews, how intense was it? Did u have to like research some of their work and did they ask u specific questions about the topic or was it just casual?

Not too great, but I suppose I can’t expect much at this point. Amusingly, I haven’t gotten a no from any of the stem cell researchers, but have been turned down by all the cancer/immunology researchers I contacted.

Hopefully that means the four might have openings, but …

shadowyams, don’t be too worried…i’m guessing they’re busy and therefore take longer to reply
I’m still working on getting my research project set up, though i believe i’ve found my mentor ^^

Yes! I found my mentor today! Reached mutual agreement on the spot

@chuckpatel, it really depends on the professor. I had two interviews today and they were quite different. One was more serious and the other one was more of a casual chat. Just have faith in yourself, you will be fine :)
