CityDays

What do people think of the CityDays event? Current students, have you done it? Was it good? Worth signing up for?

I think CityDays is pretty cool. I mean, you don't really have much of anything else to do, so why not? It's not going to be the most interesting thing you'll do during your 4 years at MIT (I stuffed envelopes), but it's kind of cool to see so many people all gearing up to go do good things for others. I'm a big fan of volunteer work to begin with, so I guess I'm a little biased. But I still say you should go. Besides, you get a free t-shirt. =)

I wasn't going to do it originally because I'm doing FUP, but then I realized what LauraN said... I also want to meet as much of the class of 2010 as possible. All the ice breakers during orientation and such are great, but you really get to know people personally when volunteering together (at least from personal experience).

yupp i signed up for it too. =]

I signed up. It's a good way to get to know the city... and unlike FUP, you don't have to pay for it!

I guess I have a different perception of it as I was one that didn't sign up for it. All I know of it is that while everyone else was waking up at the crack of dawn to go to CityDays I was sleeping in. I mean, the thing is not really designed as a community service thing but more of a constructive event that helps the new students meet other new students (what brings people closer more than griping about having to wake up early). The fact of the matter is, if you feel like you maybe don't know a lot of people at MIT or are just a social butterfly that loves to meet a lot of people, CityDays is probably a good idea. I ended up meeting a lot of people the first day and wanting to hang with them the night before rather than cutting the night short to wake up early. So my decision was good for me.

If I had a suggestion I would say that you should sign up but that you should definetly not feel obligated to go.

ditto, I signed up but changed my mind in the morning

When will we be notified of our City's Day's assignment?

Last year, I seem to remember filling out preferences about the type of work I'd like to do, but they just kept us in our orientation groups and assigned us randomly to tasks, as far as I can tell. (I mean, organizing people by orientation groups AND preferences seems unnecessarily complicated- either split up the groups or don't ask for preferences.) Anyway, we didn't find out what we were doing until that morning.

I cleaned toilets during my Citydays. Other people got to play with puppies. So who's up next for the crap shoot?

(To be fair, 90% of the people had a good time at Citydays...I guess I've just never been lucky...)

i'm making some signs at the beach. i have a feeling it'll be a good one
