Civil Engineering major, urban planning career?

Hi, I have recently become interested in a career in urban/city planning or architecture, yet my university does not offer majors in architecture or city planning, and I am on track to major in civil/environmental engineer. I am extremely interested in working towards creating sustainable cities, yet I am afraid that with my degree it would be impossible to become an architect or urban planner. Is it possible to get into a grad school in an architecture or city planning program, or does it matter what undergraduate degree I earn? Thanks.

You should be able to get into grad school with a civil engineering degree. Send the department a quick email, I’m guessing they would accept an engineering major since you do talk about similar topics. I just took a urban planning class and it was pretty interesting. I’m sure the planning departments of cities hire civil engineers, especially transportation engineers. Another possible route for sustainable cities would be smart buildings.

Just a heads up, not bashing your career choice at all. From what I was told urban planning is lower paid then engineering positions and you will be working in the public sector (could be pro or con).
