I’m currently looking to major in civil engineering, but I’ve recently seen the Architectural Engineering major pop up at some schools. Was wondering if someone could explain the differences between these two majors? Although I know architectural engineering is supposed to incorporate elements of design from architecture I wonder what is the actual difference when taking these at school.
Civil engineering tends to be more focused on infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc). Architectural engineering is focused on buildings. It’s very interdisciplinary—there’s coursework in structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as fire protection, HVAC, etc.
