so I am currently part of a 3-2 Engineering with Elon university, and I plan on going to nc state. For the second part of my program.

When I attend NC state, I am considering doing a double major with environmental and civil engineering, granted I can get all of the class requirements done!

has anyone on the forums here done this before? A lot of the classes overlap it seems, and in the career field having both seems like a pretty valuable combination.

Any advice, feedback or suggestions on this?

Also,

are there any certifications, classes, or some sort of skill that I could acquire while at school that would make me a better engineer and or make me more marketable? especially in these two areas of engineering. Like getting LEED certified? I plan on getting a minor in applied math since engineers already take so many math classes...

For civil engineering, getting a Professional Engineer license is often quite important. One of the things commonly done before graduation in this direction is to take the Fundamentals of Engineering or FE (Engineer In Training or EIT) exam.

Obviously, the usual things like seeking summer jobs or internships in the field and/or undergraduate research can help.

If its going to make you be in school longer I would not do it. Just do civil with an emphasis in environmental. This will leave allot more doors open than just an environmental engineering degree. You could also go on to get a masters in environmental engineering if you want. If you can do it without staying in school to long then go for it. I had a tough time deciding between these two majors. Everyone I asked (professors and working engineers) said civil can take environmental jobs but environmentals are generally limited to that one area. You just want as many doors to be open as possible when you graduate.

ABET is very important for civil/environmental. I am pretty sure both majors at nc state are abet accredited so no problems there.

Definitely do an internship if you can. It will help a ton with future opportunities. I would look into nc states co-op program. I am starting my first co-op rotation this spring. I am not at nc state but I know they have a co-op program.

Yea, I have a passion for all things environmental but have to come understand that environmental engineering is how humans interact with the environment, by means of waste, soils, water, air and how we remediate and repair those areas.

Your right, a civil with an environmental focus will probly be my best bet. I will leave Elon university with a degree in environmental science and a minor in applied math.

Having a civil engineering combined with those two would probly provide me with a good background for the environmental side of things.

Definitely looking into internships, coops and NC state is definitely ABET credited.
