I will be a freshmen next year with 18 transferable credits from both Dual Credit classes in High School and AP tests. My question is if it is better to claim this credit my freshmen year or wait to see if I need it? As I was browsing through the UT site, it mentioned that claiming credit came with its risks, but I'm not quite sure what these are or if anyone else has had trouble with this. Any additional information would help, thanks. :)

To encourage students to graduate on time, the state offers a $1500 rebate for students who finish with less than ~15 hours over the required amount to graduate. Claiming unnecessary credits puts you at jeopardy of losing this rebate. Moreover, once you’ve claimed credit for a class, you can no longer register for that class. This can be detrimental, for example, if you ever intend on applying to medical school as many med schools require that certain core classes be taken at an established university. Due to these complications among others, claiming credit is an issue you should discuss with your adviser.
