claiming residency in NC

hi. so im 23 and from new hampshire, been here my whole life and hate it. im currently in community college right now and wanting to transfer to north carolina state. how does claiming residency work there? i was hoping to go to a community college first, stay there for atleast a year, then transfer to NC state if i can claim residency. i plan on registering to vote, registering my car, etc in NC. is that enough? or do i have to rent an apartment and all that? i just really want to go to college there but i dont have the money to pay out of state tuition because im paying for college on my own. my parents cant afford to give me a dime for college. any suggestions to what i should do? is claiming residency the same in every state? is it different in south carolina?

or lets say i go to NC state and pay the out of state tuition, would i be able to pay the in state the following year? or someone said that you cant be going to school and work on claiming residency so would going to a community college and getting an apartment for a year work or no?

I don’t know, but am willing to bet that you can use Google for answers.

Go to the websites of colleges you’re interested in and look for residency requirements. You may want to look up transfer requirements too.

Will you be financially independent? Do your parents still claim you on their taxes? If they are still claiming you, then you can’t get instate status.

To get instate tuition in NC, you have to establish residency on NC for one year and pay NC state income taxes.
