My friend really likes Harvey Mudd because she wants to do something with biology, but she also wants to study French. So could someone explain how the five colleges work together/strengths of each and is it possible to major outside of the college you attend? Also, could you recommend the best Claremont college for her? Thanks

[The Benefits of the Claremont Colleges Consortium - Pomona College](http://www.pomona.edu/academics/curriculum/consortium.aspx)

I’m sure the Harvey Mudd has a similar page.

As for French, I’m not sure which colleges have a french department. Pomona does. Cross-registration is easy. Harvey Mudd has very wide and strict requirements, so keep in that in mind if your friend is interested in humanities.

As for the major question, it depends on each school. Pomona does not allow students to major outside, but CMC does. Not sure about Mudd.

Pomona’s biology department is very good and not quite as grueling as Mudd’s is. The other three colleges - Scripps, CMC, and Pitzer - share a science department. Joint Science is also good for biology.

It’s impossible to recommend a school without knowing your friend’s preferences. The cultures are different at each school. Mudd is science nerdy, Pomona is sort of laid back, CMC students tend to be outgoing, Scripps is an all girls school, and Pitzer students are sort of hipster-ish. I recommend that your friend visits.
