Claremont Colleges

Hey guys, I was wondering... You guys have heard of the Claremont colleges right? The sister schools. The top two that are really into the biological fields are Pamona college and Pitzer. I know a lot more about Pamona and have visited all of the schools. I am just not sure of Pitzer college. It seems like a much easier school for me to get into. The only problem is that it isn't need-blind which can screw up my hopes for going even if I do get accepted. Pamona on the other hand is need-blind, has the best biology program of all the colleges, but is almost twice as hard to get into. Their acceptance rate was about 15% last year, so very low. Pitzer college on the other hand has about a 25% entrance rate. I am hoping to apply to both schools. I just would love to get some insight on the college itself. Did anyone go there? Anyone go to either colleges and then pursue grad school in premed? If I could just get some more information on the success of each school in terms of admittance to medical school that would be great too. Any comments would also be nice.

if you do not already know, Pitzer shares its science courses with scripps and mckenna at the Keck Joint Science Center. From 2002 to 2007, nearly 78 percent of Joint Science students who applied were admitted to medical school. I dont know if you are male or female, but those two schools are good options too. In any case, you must visit both pomona and pitzer to get a feel on how much you will enjoy the social environment. And if you also want to pursue grad school and then apply to med, i guess you can also go to keck graduate institute, the claremont science grad school and get a master in bioscience degree.

I interviewed at Scripps (way back in the day), and I got the feeling that science students particularly felt like they were students of the consortium rather than students of their individual colleges. Also, the science facilities were absolutely amazing. If I hadn't lived on the other side of the country from Scripps, I would've been seriously tempted to attend, and I think that I would've felt the same way about the other colleges of the consortium as well.

what about harvey mudd for premed?

getting a decent gpa at harvey mudd is so hard- but it's one of the best engineering learning experience one can have. I wouldnt recommend it for most people though, since most of your peers may be going for grad school or work at industry. Probably it would be better to stick with the other 4c's if you want to do premed.

Also, i just want to make note that at pitzer, there are so few science majors period. At JSD, the classes are filled with students from scripps and cmc, so often times a lot of your science buddies will be from there. maybe you would like that, maybe you wont.

PM me if you have more questions.

The grade deflation at Harvey Mudd makes it bad for premed, period.
