Good luck everybody!

Accepted!
22 ACT 3.2 UC GPA
Awesome essays. I think that’s what did it.

Rejected, but I expected that so it’s whatever. 2220 SAT, 4.03 W GPA, great essays and ECs. GPA definitely brought me down, but that’s life ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Where did you guys see your results? I clicked on the link connect.cmc.edu from the email and I didn’t see anything about admission or rejection

Rejected:
4.08 W GPA (4.28 GPA 10-12 Grades)
2280 SAT
Great Extracurriculars
Good Essays

Rejected:

Lots of extracurrics w/ leadership positions
6 Seasons Var Soccer/Golf (captain 2 years)
Essays were good

No video response or interview, maybe that’s why. Otherwise, confused and mildly upset.

Wait-listed with 2350, 3.93 UW gpa, 13 APs, excellent ECs and leadership and awards, U.S. Presidential Scholar candidate

CMC is smart in that in takes only the most dedicated applicants. I didn’t do the optional video response and never had an interview (none in my region) and probably would not have strongly considered CMC even if I got in unless I received significant finaid. So far I’ve been admitted to UMich, Dartmouth (likely letter), and Bowdoin (Faculty Scholar).

Congratulations to all who were accepted!

Decision: Accepted

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Orienteering Club (takes up a majority of my time, very committed!), Poetry (Published and nationally recognized), Varsity Soccer, Playing keyboard and singing in 2 bands (Rock and Jazz), classical piano, Academic Decathlon (Founder and/or President of Each Mentioned Club), some other things for fun!
[
] Job/Work Experience: Paid performer with band, Working DJ
[] Volunteer/Community service: Athletic Leadership at school, Coaching and event volunteering for orienteering, Volunteer Event DJ
[
] Essays: I personally loved my Common App essay personally; wrote about my world defined by film (for the first prompt about “important background”). Liked my supplement as much as I could for such a short prompt; wrote about the similarities between CMC and my school with specifics.
[] Teacher Recommendations: History Teacher (10/10, Said I was his best student in all his 13+ years of teaching), Mathematics Teacher (9/10, I did extremely well in Math, and was one of 3 students in his entire class so we were pretty close. He also had me for physics so it was like 2 recommendations in one!)
[
] Counselor Rec: 10/10 (Also my English teacher, so had dual benefits in terms of the recommendation. Very small school, and she’s given me class awards and we hang out and talk a lot, so we’re pretty close. The principal of my school said it was the best recommendation he’s ever read, which was very humbling to hear!)
[li] Interview: Didn’t interview, but did the optional video response because it was only 2 minutes so I figured why not.[/ul][/li]

[] Strengths: Essays, academics (almost all A’s—besides some B’s in 9th grade—in extremely rigorous IB course load with 4 Higher Levels), excellent recommendations, dedication to extracurriculars (orienteering, poetry, and band).
[
] Weaknesses: No major awards, not a lot of research pertaining to major, didn’t fill out Common Application Activity section very well (wish I would have spent more time on it!), and perhaps specific interest in the school (didn’t get to visit/no interview).
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong academics, recommendations.

] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] AP Scholar with Distinction, CSF, Arthur Ashe Essay Contest Sectional Winner, National Merit Scholarship Commended, Questbridge College Prep Scholar

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): ASB/Leadership (Class President 9-11, Associated Student Body President 12), Debate Team (Founding member, President grade 11, 11-12), created my own website to help kids find information about college (11-12), Varsity Tennis (9-11, Captain 11-12), USTA Tennis Tournaments (9-11)
[
] Job/Work Experience: Babysitting (9-12)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Kids 4 Hydrogen (National Chapter Coordinator 11-12)
[
] Personal Statement: Common App essay talked about how I survived a tree falling on my house and how that made me realize that I am meant to do something with my life, 9/10; CMC essay was basically a list of so many things that I love about CMC, was a bit unorganized but what can you really do in 200 words?, 8/10
[] Teacher Recommendations: My Physics teacher wrote about how I was one of the greatest students he ever had 9/10, and I didn’t get to read the rec. from my English teacher but she LOVES me because I was both in her class and her TA last year so it was probably great
[
] Counselor Recommendation: My ex-ASB Adviser now Vice Principal wrote my counselor rec. and it was really great, talked about my leadership, family situation, and work ethic, 10/10
[li] Interview:[/ul] interview went SO well. My interviewer and I had so much in common and really hit it off. My dad was getting worried because we took so much extra time talking that people who went in for their interview after I did came out 20 minutes before me[/li]
Other

[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[li]** Intended Major **: Government/International Relations[/li][
] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Public
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[
] Income Bracket: <$60,000 w/ a family of 8
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): I may be considered first gen? None of my parents graduated from a 4 year[/ul][/li]
Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, test scores, leadership
[
] Weaknesses: was worried that some of my activities would look like “fillers” because I don’t put a ton of hours into them each week, was also worried because there’s a lot of school presidents out there and I didn’t know how impressive it would look as a leadership position
[] Why do you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My grades and test scores definitely put me in the place to be considered for CMC, but it was definitely my leadership that got me in. I think my “Why CMC” essay conveyed the true passion that I have for my activities and showed that I would take advantage of all that CMC has to offer.
[
] Schools you were accepted to: UCSD, UCLA, Wellesley, University of Miami
[] Schools you were waitlisted/rejected from: Pomona (waitlisted-- but who cares now!)
[
] Schools you are waiting for:[/ul] Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Brown, Tufts, Georgetown, George Washington

**General Comments: ** I am SO EXCITED! CMC has been my #1 ever since I started researching schools last year and this is absolutely a dream. I was a bit worried because there were so many applicants this year and they were going to accept such a small percentage and didn’t know how my activities would show on my application. The thing is though, CMC accepts a certain type of person, and I have always known that that was the exact type of person I am. I just tried to be myself and show that I truly belong on that campus.

Congrats to everyone else who was accepted! CMC is a truly amazing place.

Reflection

Strengths: Grades, Intense focus on engagement in society, Risk taker
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Main CMC Essay since I knew my ACTs were not so hot.
Weaknesses: ACTs/ Extracurriculars could have been stronger
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m honestly lost/ surprised! I have no idea!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at Lawrence/ Cornell (LL)/ Macalester/ Vassar and now here!!! . Rejected at Denison/Colby/Trinity/Colgate/Dickinson/Davidson

After a series of so many rejections, yesterday was certainly a very very wonderful day. First Vassar and then here. I was so shocked this morning when I opened my portal as this was highly unexpected. OMG plus the full tuition scholarship has totally blown me away!!!

ARRGGGGHHHHH!!! I’m so happy!!!

Congratulations to all others who got in and commiserations to those who didn’t. If you were waitlisted you still have a shot at admission and I hope you get in. To all those who didn’t get in, I know how you feel…in the stretch of 5 days I was rejected from all those schools. It was unbelievable and I decided against checking anymore decisions. But my brother gave me some resounding advice, ‘You win some. You lose some.’ So I’m sure you all have fantastic choices to choose from.

All the best guys

Essays:
Common App: About how I challenged people’s beliefs about me because as a petite, nerdy girl, I can do lots of push-ups. It was kind of funny, and everyone who read it liked it. I spent a long time on it. 9/10
Why CMC? Essay: Kind of risky. I have very little leadership, so I basically addressed that in my essay and said that I want to become a leader and that I thought CMC could help me achieve that. I also used some humor, so I’m hoping it simultaneously captured my personality. 8/10 if it worked, like 3/10 if it didn’t lol
Teacher Recommendation #1: Not sure. I picked this teacher because he saw me help out other students in his class, but it’s impossible for me to say if he wrote a lot about that in his rec.
Teacher Recommendation #2: I think this one was good. This teacher and I were kind of on the same wavelength, and I gave him a ton of supplemental information to pull from.
Counselor Rec: She likes me, but it was probably kind of bland. She has 239 other kids to worry about.
Additional Rec: N/A
Video Supplement: Did not complete, I was too busy doing other apps, and I really had no clue what to do for it.

Weaknesses: Course load rigor could be better, very little leadership, only one substantial EC, very little leadership
Why you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It’s super competitive and I didn’t have the leadership they were looking for.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Rutgers and the University of Alabama EA, accepted to WashU, Oxford College at Emory, Tufts, BU, and William and Mary RD; Rejected at Pomona, CMC, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, USC, and Middlebury; Waitlisted at American, UVa, and Kenyon

General Comments:

This sounds funny, but I think the adcoms made the right call. After I applied, I kind of realized that I probably wouldn’t fit in at CMC. I don’t have the pre-professional mindset, and I’m not a natural born leader. I thought maybe being around those types of people would help me in some way, but I honestly would probably have felt kind of alienated/intimidated and just hung out with the Pomona kids. I was blinded by my desire to be somewhere in the 5C Consortium and thought maybe I could make CMC work. If I did it over again, I would consider swapping out CMC for Scripps. Congrats to everyone who got in, and I hope CMC is the right fit for you (it probably is, I think the adcoms know what they’re doing).

Current CMC senior here, Hit me up with any questions!! Claremont is one of the best places in the world, congrats to all that have been accepted and are waiting to enroll!
I remember being in your position, it was a great feeling.
