Claremont McKenna or USC Econ?

Which would you choose and why?
Which one has better job prospects?

Both are good...

They have totally different environments. Go for the one you like and think you'd do your best in.

which one do you think has a better name/prestige to employers, grad schools, people who know about academia?

USC has an absolutely sick alumni network

In general, USC is a more well known school. However, I think CMC has a better economics department. Personally, I'd choose CMC if I were interested in economics. You may feel differently, but I like that CMC is a much smaller school but that as part of a consortium, you have access to a lot classes. As UCBChemGrad said, the environment is also very different.

I agree that Clarement Economics department is better known. But Clarement is small and USC is a big university so there are more people, more alumni.

FYI, one of Clarment's alumni with a degree in Economics is an advisor to Microsoft and he donated $20 million last year.

If you like a more intimate environment, CMC is where you want to be.

If you're looking for a large alumni network, then USC is the better choice.

I think something that i liked about CMC is that because it is small, any time you hit up an alum for connections/network it wouldn't be like oh here's another CMC student, where i think you probably get at USC?

Statistically that's irrelevent because even though there are more USCer's then cmcer's the USC alumni network will be proportionally larger. You would really have to analyze the positions and loyalty of the alumni of each school.

I guess that makes sense. However if I end up going to grad/law school CMC would have the better name?

^ The school name is not going to get you in the door. It's going to be your grades, GRE/LSAT scores, and recommendations that count a lot more.

Go to the school with an environment that will allow you to focus and have some fun...The happier you are, the better you'll do...and that's what is most important.

You won't go wrong with either...but, CMC and USC are completely different. We can't tell you which one you'd prefer...only you can answer this question.

Most LACs focus on writing and I heard CMC puts a big emphasis on writing. Also CMC is a smaller environment than USC, you may get more attention on your writing which is a big plus when you graduate. This is why USC has the Thematic Option.
