I've been looking around on CC for transfer threads and most of the posts I find are community college transfers that have a 4.0 gpa or so. Also, a lot of the posts are students looking at "transferring up" to higher level schools.
Does anyone have any insight on transferring to a school of similar selectivity? How difficult would it be as compared to a CC transfer (I'm transferring from a Top 10 Liberal Arts college).
Oh, and I'm looking at applying as a transfer to Claremont McKenna (and maybe Pomona). I've decided I don't want to go to school in the east coast (I don't do well with snow) and the college I'll be attending doesn't have much diversity (approaches 65-70% white)

2120 SAT with a 3.5/4.2 HS gpa... I know minority status can significantly help in freshman applications, but does it still play a factor in transfer admissions (1st generation Hispanic dual citizen)?

Thanks for any insight !

You haven’t gone to school yet? Would you consider community college or is it too late?
I mean if you’re transferring from a Top 10 Liberal Arts college that will help you. I hear Pomona mostly takes Ivy League transfers, but there are community college students who enter as well.
CMC I hear is a bit easier to transfer into. Your minority status is still a factor. Are you applying for Spring 2015 or Fall 2015? Make sure to have an upward trend in your grades because that is always attractive to a college.

Thanks for the reply. I’d be applying for Fall of 2015 – I start in about 2 weeks. I don’t think I’d want to go to a community college because I’d imagine that would make transferring to a school like CMC significantly harder as compared to my current institution. I’m hopping to maintain an A- average or anything around a 3.6 (don’t know if that will be strong enough?)

I don’t think I could stand a change applying for spring 2015 because my HS record isn’t very strong so I definitely need the college gpa to improve my chances, right?

I think you should think about transfer for Fall 2016, at that time you will not be judged from your HS grades and SAT. It will help if you keep a 3.7+ in your college gpa.

You have not started the school yet and you are worried about your pick? I think you should at least give it a try, you may like it. Why a majority white student body bothers you? and why did you accept that school’s admission offer in the first place? Have you thought of Howard in DC?

I don’t really have anything particularly helpful to say, but I was admitted as a transfer to CMC (and a Pomona reject). First, I definitely agree that you should the school you’re attending a chance. I started out at a school that I thought I would hate and transfer out of immediately and ended up loving it. I did transfer after my sophomore year, but I had a great 2 years and I recommend going into it with a positive attitude and trying to see what you can get out of it.

Additionally, I’d just like to highly recommend interviewing for CMC/Pomona whenever you end up applying. I think that makes a difference for them, or it can. I’d say I was fairly average for CMC, but I interviewed there and really conveyed why it would be a good fit for me (poli sci/econ person so it made sense for me to be interested). They commented at the end that I seemed very focused and grounded and right for CMC, which I’m sure helped my admissions chances. I didn’t interview at Pomona, and I always wonder what might have happened if I had interviewed. It can be hard to interview and tour while in college- I had to take a day during finals week and fly down to CA at 4 am, get back at midnight. It was rough, but worth it.
