Hi there, almost time to apply! I just want to make sure I am doing this right with calculating my GPA cause I have a lot of CCC units.
It says on the application for CSU to include the number of units completed and the number of units attempted.
Does this mean that I include all the classes I dropped and got a W’s in, in the units attempted section? Do I include classes that are not CSU transferable in the units attempted section ?
As for completed units, I assume I only include the CSU transferable.
Now for the cumulative GPA, how do I determine this ? Is it total units attempted that are CSU transferable divided by the total grade points ? OR is it the total units completed divided by the grade points ?
In my case I will have 3 schools listed each with it’s own GPA. Do the CSUs add these GPAs together into one overall ? If so do you know how this is done so I can see where I stand?
Also, and this is unrelated to GPA, just something I was hoping to clarify on the application. It asks me to input the term of application. Is this the term that I am presently enrolled in at my CCC or is this the term that I am planning to start taking courses at the CSU? Then the next question is about the “last term attended”, do they mean A) last semester, do they mean B) the last term I will be enrolled in my CCC when I graduate, or do they mean C) the term I am in right now?
Lastly, I read about grade cards for academic progress after initial admission. Do I need to get these for my current semester or for my last semester ? Where does one get a grade card ?
Thanks a lot you guys.
Where are you seeing the application, I was told that the application for CSU’s are not open until October 1st.
You can download a printable application for CSU off the CSU mentor site for 2015/16 https://secure.csumentor.edu/Support/tech_support.asp#application. So do you know anything about Ws counting for transferable GPA or how to calculate the cumulative GPA that the application asks for ?
You need to list every class you received a mark in, including W’s - even transferrable and non-transferrable classes. They basically want to know everything. W’s don’t effect your GPA but you still need to disclose that you received a W in a class on your application. To calculate your GPA, use https://secure.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp
You can use it to calculate everything, not just high school stuff. Just enter in all A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s, and F’s. I’ve been using it to keep track of my GPA, but I don’t calculate any classes that are NOT CSU transferrable classes, because they won’t look at non-transerrable courses so you don’t need to factor them in. But if you want to know you’re overall GPA, enter in every letter grade you’ve ever received. If you want to know what your CSU transferrable GPA is, don’t include letter grades that aren’t transferrable.
Example: I took Math 206 at my school. It is not transferrable to CSU or UC. It’s just a class I need to take to get to another class. I received a C. I would not use that grade to calculate my GPA as colleges will not even look at that class.
I took Math 13. I got a C. That IS a class that’s transferrable to CSU and UC. I would factor that grade into my calculations. They will pay attention to that class, therefor it’s important when calculating my GPA.
First thank you for your reply ! I have not seen a section on the CSU application for listing all my classes, only a request for units attempted, units completed and cumulative gpa. Does CSU transferable include classes with Ws that are CSU transferable ? So when I calculate my GPA is it based of units attempted or units completed ?
Here is a good guide for Section 7 of the application in regards to what you put for units completed and units attempted and GPA for each school:
http://www.glendale.edu/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=4273
I also found this:
SCREEN 7: College Information
Previous Colleges Attended: List every college you have attended, currently attend, and plan to attend
before transferring to CSU. Each college should be listed only once. Start with the most recent. Enter
the number of CSU transferable units actually completed and posted, the date you ever first attended, and
the date you last attended or will last attend. Treat AP exams like a college, entering “AP (name of exam)”
and 3-6 units for each score of 3, 4, or 5. AP units awarded will depend on the specific AP exam passed.
Note about pop-up box on screen 7: “Units attempted to date” and “Grade points” and “Cumulative
GPA” are in reference to individual colleges or universities attended by the applicant. The units attempted
and grade points are intended to assist students and CSU campuses in calculating the self-reported
cumulative GPA more accurately. These units attempted and grade point fields allow the applicant to
provide details for each college or university attended, however the two fields are optional and may be left
blank. The cumulative GPA field and units completed are required. Courses completed with a “CR” or
“Pass” grade, although included in the total units attempted and completed fields, should not be included
when calculating the cumulative GPA. The cumulative GPA field is self-reported; the information entered
in this field is not used to validate information in other fields.
Later in screen 7, applicants are separately asked to provide their cumulative GPA in all transferable
undergraduate college work. It is this GPA, and the sum of all units completed on which campus
application processing is based.
Honestly, I would have a counselor help with this because it looks easy to mess up if you are not 100% clear on what they’re asking, and tbh it’s worded confusingly.
I’m confused by what you mean by “Does CSU transferable include classes with Ws that are CSU transferable” Do you mean when calculating your GPA? When calculating your GPA you don’t do anything with a W as it’s not a letter grade and means nothing to your GPA. It’s like not getting anything at all. It counts towards nothing, it has no negative or positive impact, even if it’s for a CSU/UC transferrable class.
Man you are way cool for providing this info and that helpful link !!!
I know that units completed doesn’t include Ws, but… here is an example.
class) English 1
units) 3 units
trans) CSU
grade) A
grdpts) 12
class) History 2
units) 3 units
trans) CSU
grade) A
grdpts) 12
class) Stats 1
units) 3 units
trans) CSU
grade) W
grdpts) 0
class) Cooking 2
units) 3 units
trans)
grade) W
grdpts) 0
if I was adding the above pretend classes up, for my cumulative GPA or for my transferable GPA …
if I am calculating GPA by grade points/units attempted and I count only the Stats 1 W (because it’s a CSU transferable course) into the total and leave out the cooking W I would calculate this by 24 / 9 = 2.67 GPA
if I am calculating GPA by grade points/units attempted and I count both Ws it’s 24 / 12 = 2.0 GPA
if I am calculating GPA by grade points/units attempted (excluding both Ws) it’s 24 / 6 = 4.0 GPA
if I am counting GPA by grade points/units completed it’s 24 / 6 = 4.0 GPA
thats why im wondering if its grade points / units attempted or grade points / units completed
thats why im wondering about how to count Ws, and Ws from CSU transferable classes
these different combinations greatly effect a GPA as you can see a range of 2.0 - 4.0
I see what you mean. I honestly don’t know for sure. I would think it would be grade points/units completed, but again i’m not sure and i don’t want to give you wrong information. This has always kind of confused me, and i’ve always used the UC TAP coursework section to keep track of my GPA and how many units i’ve completed. I am pretty sure that you count W’s as 0 as I know for sure they don’t mean anything. For instance, on my own school’s unofficial transcript, for one semester I took 3 classes. Math 206 was 5 units. I got a C. That gave me a total of 10 units completed. Spanish 1A I got a W. It was a 5 unit class. I got 0.00 for that class. For English 5, it was 4 units. I got an A, so I earned 16 units for that class. Below it on my transcript it says Term totals: 14.00 (because 5 + 5 + 4 = 14) is what I enrolled in for the semester, I only attempted 9 units (5 units for Math 206, 0 for Spanish 1A as I dropped it and received a W, and 4 for English). I earned 26 units total for that semester (10 earned from the C in Math, 0 from my dropped Spanish class, and 16 for the A in English = 26 units)
So they definitely did not count the W when calculating what I earned in terms of units for that semester. So whatever you’re calculating just don’t consider the W in calculating anything.
So with what you wrote, I would go with the 24/6 (excluding both Ws)
Hope that helps and is not confusing at all. Hope someone else can chime in, or I would go see a counselor.
Wow ok thank you so much, I see that the Ws have an N/A by them. I will go with this for now and check with a counselor as well. Thank you very very much for your help it made all the difference
No problem, I’ve had the same kind of question for a long time and was glad to kind of work it out with someone else. It’s super confusing! Good luck!
Hi, I have a similar question… just to clarify, I don’t include the units I’m enrolled THIS semester into the calculation of “units attempted” right? Its only the units that have posted grades already?
Because on my unofficial transctipt it says 49 under attempted and 30 as earned, but that includes the +19 current courses I’m in, so I’m assuming its not accurate for transfer purposes
I’m currently grappling with the application right now and i’m not having a very fun time. In section 7, don’t factor in the units you’re currently taking in “units attempted”. Section 10 will have you list what classes you’re taking currently and what classes you WILL be taking next semester. Just use the classes you’ve already completed up until this current semester.
And, unlike the paper application, the only thing you’re calculating are CSU transferrable classes. You can use Assist.org to figure out which classes at your school are CSU transferrable (it’s most of them except for some math classes).
My understanding of units attempted is that you count anything that you got an A,B,C,D,F or P/NP in. It doesn’t mean Ws, it doesn’t mean in progress, it doesn’t mean courses that have academic renewal applied to them. My colleges ended up having the units attempted number being the same as units completed.
So the courses planned and in progress are entered in their section (34), and this section only has a unit value column where you add up the total units. This is separate from anything used to calculate each college’s cumulative GPA in section H.
If you majored in something like a vocational program or got a certification check with that campus about how those units transfer, it was a confusing mess to get my units clarified but I did through the counseling office online service.
Oh and if you have trouble finding your CCCID number, contact the CCCApply help desk lol, that one slowed me down too.
