Clarifying "Postmark"

"Our application is generally available around August 1, both online and on paper. Early Decision applications must be postmarked or submitted online by November 1; Regular Decision by January 1." -JHU Website

Does this mean that teacher recommendations can arrive late but needs to arrive at the post office by January 1 where they put postmarks?

No. You need to get your portion into a post office by Jan. 1. They fully understand that teachers' and schools' information may trickle in.

hello,i am from pakistan.......could anyone please explain what a postmark deadline means..is it possible to dhl/ups/fedex the transcripts etc on,say,31 december even if it happens to be deadline as well?
i know it is a stupid thing to do but my school has closed already for winter break and the counselor's recommendation cannot be sent until at least Monday 31st when the school re-opens
thanks

So you mean "yes"? I was asking if my teachers' portions can arrive after the deadline.

Schools differ. I can tell you what most do when they have a Jan 1 deadline but you need to check what your particular college does. Most that have a Jan 1 deadline mean that the app must be postmarked, meaning in the US that the post office has stamped it received by the post office by that date (or emailed by that date) and since the post office is not open Jan 1, it needs to be mailed by December 31; usually having it in the hands of UPS or Fed X, if that method of transmittal is chosen, on that date will also qualify. Recommendations, test scores, and official transcripts can both be postmarked and arrive after that date -- they usually would like to have those in their hands by January 10 or 15 (dependiing on school). However, some may require that all such things be "postmarked" by Jan 1.

I am amending this because I realized the OP is referring to JHU. It wants app, the teacher evaluation, school transcript, and for internationals, the certification of finances form, all postmarked by the app deadline. However, it also says that if you says that if your app submitted by the deadline is incomplete because one of the tingsd required is missing they will inform you and give you an opportunity to submit it quickly. Thus, if you send something other than the app very promptly after Jan 1, you will pronbably be okay.

Almawins: As long as your application is received before the first, you're fine. It's OK for your transcript and teachers' recs to get there a day or so later.
