Clarity Check

Chess is one of my major extra-curriculars, and a couple of years ago I became the state chess champion. But what did you think when you heard the phrase "state chess champion"? Did you think I was referring to a scholastic (e.g. Grade 10, or K-12) championship, or did you think I meant that I was the state chess champion among adults?

Anyway, I've seen posts by other CC members claiming to be the "state chess champion," and when I asked them about it, they said they were actually the scholastic champion. Until now, I was planning to write "2012 State Chess Champion" on my application, but it occurred to me that adcoms might think that I meant that I was the scholastic state chess champion (which would be significantly less significant).

So, do you think it obvious that "State Chess Champion" means that I was top among adults, or do you think I need to write something like "State Chess Champion (Among Adults)" on my application? The latter feels awkward, but I feel it might be necessary.

In retrospect, this feels like a really minor detail, and I almost regret asking about it, but I'd prefer not to diminish one of my achievements.

Not a trivial question at all, and very impressive accomplishment! I am unsure about the phrasing, but have you considered adding perhaps your ELO or any titles (say IM or the ones below)? I think that may add context.

I don’t know 100% how this works. Is it an official state competition? You should specify what exactly endorses the competition. If it is the state itself, say “X State Chess Champion 2012.” If there is room to add additional info(whether at the end of your application or in your EC’s portion of the app), that would be a good place to clear up any confusions.

@HappyHelper: Oddly enough, my ELO is not that impressive (1950s), but I was able to beat multiple IM/FM/NMs in the state championship.

I see what you mean. I would have thought scholastic level, yes. But I am not an admissions officer and they are likely more aware. Maybe
