Clark:How Unsafe Is the Area?

My D was accepted at Clark (also considering Ithaca & Muhlenberg). She likes Clark and wants to major in Psychology, but the neighborhood has her reconsidering. Anyone know the crime stats there or other info?

You can sample court records for the last few weeks from the Worcester Telegram. They don’t seem to have a police blotter.

There are about 20 registered sex offenders living within a mile of the campus (probably not unusual for an urban campus). I had a look at Clark’s Campus Security pages and didn’t see any police reports. There’s a lot of other information there and it may be worthwhile taking a look.

I took several courses at Clark back in the 1980s and it wasn’t the greatest of places back then. My understanding that crime in the downtown area has gotten worse though Clark isn’t in the downtown area. Some of the crime spills over to the WPI campus.

Obviously there are a lot of students there - in an urban setting, you have to be aware of your surroundings and the relative safety of places during the day, night and weekends.

I rather enjoyed the classes that I took there and still remember them: Statistics, Japanese Economy and Natural History of North America.

Please remember this report is about ONE incident, but since it is a recent one, I thought I would post it – [Worcester Telegram & Gazette - telegram.com - Sexual assault sets Clark campus on edge](http://www.telegram.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120224/NEWS/302249919/1116) I know nothing beyond what is reported here.

To some extent it seems to indicate that students felt so safe, the student involved thought nothing of walking alone at 3:30 am. I think in general, it easy for college students to feel unrealistically safe. A level of caution is appropriate no matter where a student attends.

here are crime stats for Clark – [Crime Definitions and Statistics | University Police | Clark University](University Police | Clark University) I believe that legally (under the Clery Act) , this information has to be made available by all schools – you should be able to find it at their web site – I found this just by putting “crime statistics” into the schools search engine (you could also try using Clery Act as search term. So to give this context, you should look up and compare the stats at the other schools she is considering.

Doing a quick search at the other schools you say she is considering, I found the following: Ithaca’s figures seem to be on page 30 of this report – <a href=“Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management | Ithaca College”>Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management | Ithaca College; Muhelnberg’s info seems to be in this document – http://www.muhlenberg.edu/pdf/main/aboutus/campus-safety/annual_report.pdf</a> (chart seems to be near very end).

I will add – both of my kids strongly considered Clark several years ago – there was a lot to like about it. Rather than try to isolate itself from its surroundings, the school (at least at the presentations we attended) seems to try to turn lemons into lemonade by making the nature of the community an opportunity for the school and its students to do outreach.

Sorry this is nearly 2 years late in responding! I am now looking at colleges for my son, so am on CC once again. Thanks so much for the fantastic links, unbelievablem and BCEagle91! My DD ended up choosing Ithaca College in upstate NY and she is extremely happy there and got an RA position this year. Worcester seems to be having even more crime this year; we have friends who live there, about 10 minutes from the college, and they have agreed that the area is not the safest. It depends onhow mature and safety-minded your child is, I suppose. What disturbed us back then was that, on our accepted student day tour, there was a homeless man begging us for spare change right on campus. That placed the nail in the coffin for my DD.
