Living in a cotton town will be a great experience if I can actually go there. I really haven’t seen the actual physical cotton in my whole life! I hope that the fields will give me inspiration to write something.

But I don’t know… It’s a “tech” instead of a “liberal arts/humanities” university.

Note that it’s just Texas Tech, not Texas Institute of Technology or anything. It’s not really a technical school. Actually, the English faculty has some big names, like Dennis Covington, who’s famous for his writings on Southern serpent-handlers.

You know, I never once saw cotton during Clark Scholars. I hope I’m not shattering your hopes or anything. Maybe we did pass a cotton field on one of our “field trips,” but I might not have been paying attention.

I don’t know anymore, it’s not really like I can do anything at this point if they didn’t get the transcript. So yup, just gonna wait and see, if I get in, great, if not, I can blame it on our transcript person (which is probably not the proper term) and move on.

I read a book (published in 2009) describing Lubbock as a cotton town. Check out the book! Its name is The Travels of A T-Shirt in the Global Economy by Pietra Rivoli, a Georgetown professor.

Sure there is - you can send it again. Ms. Durham may be a little annoyed, but they’ll probably take it.

Really? Hm. Maybe I should check it out. All I know is that the Texas Tech campus is in a Spanish Renaissance style and very well-kept - outside of that, Lubbock is not the prettiest town, but it’s still not bad.

Anyway, I thought I should keep you guys updated on the future of last year’s Clark Scholars!
I got into Pomona, University of Chicago, and Grinnell, and I’m choosing between Pomona and Michigan State University (Lyman Briggs residential college and Honors College). Since MSU gave me a full ride + tons of research opportunities, I’ll probably go there.
Here are the options/choices for other Clarkies! (If they’re undecided, I listed all possibilities; otherwise, I just picked the one they’re going to.)
-Brown PLME, Yale, Harvard, and a full ride at Washington and Lee
-Duke and a full ride at UNC
-UT-Austin, Texas Tech, and GA Tech
-Notre Dame
-Princeton, Amherst, a bunch of others which I couldn’t keep track of
-Stanford and maybe others
-Stanford, Columbia, Georgetown, maybe others
-Rice (trying to get into the Rice/Baylor med program), Duke, and some USC medical program (good scholarships at Rice and USC)
-UT and maybe others?
-One already goes to Berkeley
-And there’s one more we haven’t heard from

I think the least “prestigious” university any Clarkie has gone to recently was University of Alabama, but I’m pretty sure that was on a full ride or something.

^^ thanks for updating us that should be a source of inspiration for all the Clarkies of this year!

And speaking of, sadly I just withdrew my application to Clark this year (I was accepted to another program that wanted to hear back by last week, and Clark haven’t given out decisions yet, so I went with the safer choice. Which was REALLY hard choice…)

But thanks to all of you for your great info! I’ll be applying next year so hopefully I’ll still get the amazing Clark experience. And good luck to all of you when decisions come out! Hopefully you’ll all make it :D

Ugh. Traitor. We’re never talking to you again. Go on to your stupid little Long Island program and never pollute this thread with your presence again!

(Although I was sympathetic in private, I’m afraid I can’t be in public. Sorry! :P)

Anyway, yeah, make sure to apply next year and pollute the Clarkie 2011 thread with your presence. Simons will be a huge boost to your admissions chances…if they really can be boosted at all! (95% to 99%?)

Wow, thanks for all your public support proletariat! (that was dripping with sarcasm)

Don’t worry, I’ll leave you guys in peace and remove my “polluting” presence (at least for this year). But for those of you who do go to Clark this summer (all of you I hope!) let me know how it is! And I hope you see some cotton fields happysunshine That would be really neat!

Sorry, happysunshine, but don’t count on much contact with these cotton fields! You’ll probably have the opportunity to do lots of other interesting things, though. If there’s someone from Lubbock in your batch of Clarkies who has a car, they might be able to drive you around to see all the interesting sights!

By the way, guys, there are a lot more mosquitoes than one would expect for a town in the middle of what’s practically a desert. It’s also a lot more green than one would expect. The campus is really well-kept - James Michener said it was one of the prettiest campuses in the country, second only to Stanford for campuses west of the Mississippi. Maybe that’ll inspire your writings, happysunshine!

Thank you proletariat2 and celeridad!
But I need to get in first. One of my essays was ‘horrible’ (the first part of it sounds really bitter) and the field I chose was narrow.
How’s the school’s library?

Well, I don’t know about the rest of the library, but the sheet music section was very good, and there’s a lot of science material, too. You can browse the library catalog to test the breadth of its collection if you want!

Well, there are pros and cons to writing about a “narrow” field in your essay; I don’t think it’ll affect your admission as long as it’s clear you know what you’re talking about, but it will affect your mentor placement! And all of us last year were ashamed of our essays; nobody but blueducky even shared theirs with anyone else. Mine was just…bad, really. Incredibly arrogant-sounding.

i apologize in advance as i know similar questions have been asked, but can one of the previous clark scholars tell me the date when semifinalists and final acceptances was announced?

i got my rejection letter today. it said that they had to pick 12 out of 180. which is still better than 70/1200 for MITES, wHICH I GOT INTO! it was my first choice so this rejection didn’t really mean much but, my point is,

the mailing has started. start crossing fingers people!

OMG! Really? The decisions are coming out?
Can anybody else verify what College-goer said?
12 out of 180… The acceptance rate is close to that of Harvard.
