Still waiting for any word… The organization said I was still a candidate and would let me know when a decision was made but gave me no deadline Hopefully soon…

@BostonBoy95, what is your field? My field is mathematics and computation. Good Luck!!!
@SniperCat30, did you get a call?Which coast do you live? If you live in east coast, then did you mean you got a phone call at 10 pm?
I think I was rejected and missed my email somehow…:(

I received a phone call three days ago asking if I was still interested in the program. I then got a confirmation e-mail the day after that. I do live on the east coast. If you still have not heard anything back, I would recommend e-mailing Dr. San Francisco.

My personal experience and opinion is “Don’t waste time to apply this summer program because they just don’t have enough mentors and are not very organized.”

@ Angie I would just like to say that your opinion seems a bit overly negative and biased. Mistakes do happen so if they haven’t contacted you yet I would reach out to them at this point. As a Clarkie alum I’d like to add from experience this program is very well run and a phenomenal experience that you should definitely take if you get the chance to. The reply time varies because it depends on how fast your potential mentor responds and how busy he/she is. It’s good to keep mind that they are often principle investigators of labs and professors with plenty of grads and post docs and experiments to keep them busy. Taking on the role of a mentor to a high school student is no small commitment so please be patient. Last year we had to wait into May as well.

In addition there are plenty of mentors actually but it really comes down to how well your research interests match the mentors’ research focus.

You never know the outcome unless you apply and the opportunity is definitely worth a try! The app really isn’t too bad especially since if you’re a junior it’s good prep for college apps and if you’re a senior most of the questions can be easily answered by modifying an essay youve already written. :)

got offered a mentor about three weeks ago - turned this down for TASP. have a great summer, all!

They’ve already sent an email to us Clark Scholars telling us the names of all the 2012 Clark Scholars, so I don’t think they’re selecting anymore at this point.

Essays: my SIMR essays were a bit better than my essays for other programs. I would say my essays were all right. I talked about my research internship last summer, and how I continued researching from home for 2 weeks to get good results; a little about my research interests (which were vague, I must admit); briefly about other qualifications (Im willing to work hard, i can work with others, as evidenced by xyz, etc.) Overall, my essays were not very personal, which was probably a weakness.
The one exception was the SIMR diversity essay, which was quite good.

If you think you might possibly have a shot at any summer program, apply for it, it can’t hurt. That being said, make sure you have backup plans, and apply to LOTS of programs! I was rejected from 5 summer internships before I heard back from SIMR! There is some inherent uncertainty in the selection process; plan accordingly.

That being said, best of luck!

Post #327 stated: “Now I’m sure that this program mainly offers the positions to those who haven’t gotten any prior research experience to engage them in science…”

Is this correct?

Of the 12 attendees, how many had/had not prior research experience?

Please reply as DS is interested in applying for summer 2013.

My DS, who attended Clark in 2011, had research experience albeit was independent and through his high school for credit. Also, I think post 343 stated research experience and was accepted for 2012. Clark accepts with/without research experience as I know my DS attended with other Scholars without prior research. Good luck to your DS!! :)

student4ever:), thanks for your reply. That makes me feel much better!

Hey, past Clarkies! I was accepted to this program this year…but I have a few questions. Is it possible for me to change my chosen interest areas? I chose biochem and psychology when I applied in February. Now that I know I will apply to college with a Computer Science major in mind, however, I would like to change my interest topic to Computer Science and hopefully combine it with biochemistry/psychology somehow… Is that possible? I don’t want to ask Dr. SF for a change before I can ask around. Thanks!
