Decided to start a thread for those who are applying ED to Clark University. My D applied ED and we expect to hear in the next few weeks. My understanding is that only about 100 or less applicants apply early decision. Good luck to all.

Has your daughter heard yet? We heard that the letters were sent out yesterday but my daughter hasn’t received the letter yet. The waiting is tough.

No, she hasn’t heard yet. Thanks for the information. We’ll be looking for the envelope tomorrow. Good luck!

D accepted ED. She and her parents are very happy campers right now.

For those of you lurkers out there, here is news about the selection of Clark’s next President, effective July 2010. I have been fortunate to know the current President, John Bassett. John has done an amazing job in the last decade with development and advacement of the school’s competitive standing. I met David Angel in October and I was very impressed with him–I am hopeful and optimistic that he will continue to build on John’s success.

To: Members of the Clark community
From: William S. Mosakowski '76, Chairman of the Board
Date: December 30, 2009

As Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Clark University, I am extremely pleased to announce the selection of the institution’s ninth and next chief executive. On Tuesday, December 22, 2009 the Board of Trustees met in a special executive session and unanimously authorized the Advisory/Search Committee to enter into contract negotiations with Provost David Angel for the position of president. He will assume the post on July 1, 2010 when President John Bassett completes his ten years at Clark.

As the internal candidate, David Angel went through an exhaustive and comprehensive evaluation process unparalleled in the University’s history. He met with the Advisory/Search Committee on two occasions and presented to the Board of Trustees in person and via conference call in a session held in New York City. He also met with faculty leaders, the full faculty, administrators, staff, and students in nine sessions on campus during December. Throughout these intensive sessions, David emerged as a leader, expressing a clear vision for Clark’s future that builds on the strengths which have made our University unique and transformative for students past and present. He demonstrated a deep understanding of the challenges facing the University in the context of a rapidly changing landscape in higher education and outlined his strategy for improving Clark’s competitive position with conviction and urgency.

The support and enthusiasm for David Angel’s election to president has been inspiring and reassuring to those of us involved in the evaluation process. The reports the committee received from each constituency group who met with the candidate made it clear that the Clark community is aligned in support of David Angel’s vision for Clark and his capabilities for leading us. We know that with David at the helm, we will continue to have a passionate supporter of the values we hold dear. Clark will remain an integral leader in its neighborhood, improving the lives of those on campus and in our community. The University will achieve greater national and international visibility; the institution will improve its outreach and connection to both young and long-standing alumni; we will strive to continually improve our performance across all endeavors in and outside of the classroom; and Clark will retain its “mystique” but be ever responsive to the evolving needs of those it serves and desires to educate. In other words, Clark will live up to its motto: Challenge Convention. Change our World.

I want to thank all of those involved in this unprecedented evaluation and selection process.
Your participation is greatly valued and appreciated by both the Advisory/Search Committee and the full Board of Trustees. Let me also note the advice and support generously offered by our faculty over the past three months.

Finally, the Board of Trustees appreciates the progress made during the last ten years under the leadership of President Bassett. During his tenure, we recruited half of the current faculty, improved student quality, increased retention and graduation rates, added exciting new academic and athletic facilities, and built a strong foundation for the future. His legacy is firmly established and he will leave Clark a better place.

The next six months will be used productively to move the University forward in a challenging environment. President-elect Angel will present a comprehensive first-year plan at the spring meeting of the Board of Trustees. In addition, he will be charged with recruiting and making several key senior-level appointments to the University’s management team.

The Board of Trustees and I are confident that David Angel will provide the leadership to open a new chapter in Clark’s history. He is an innovative thinker, a disciplined executive, a passionate teacher and a continual learner, an articulate presenter and the embodiment of the values we hold for the University. Please join me in offering him your congratulations, best wishes, and support required to achieve the aspirations we all have for Clark University.
