Anyone else applying to Clarkson this year? Seems quiet so I thought I would start a thread leading up to RD notification.

Yup, I applied. Like the small college feeling, love their engineering facilities. Really like their job placement rate internship placement. Not sure I like the thought of being stick in the north country of New York for four years, but it’s just four years. I also applied to syracuse, RPI, RIT, Buffalo, Drexel.

S agrees with you on all accounts, but is a skier and enjoys kayaking so the region is very appealing to him, but it is a bit isolated. The weather wont bother him though and there are other schools in the area to add to the social aspect. Also applied RPI and RIT as well as WPI, UVM, BU.

Did anyone who applied RD get their decision letters yet?

My daughter got an acceptance letter today.

Any mention of merit awards with the notification?

No… the letter said that information would come in March

My daughter got her letter on the 30th too.

Yes, admit letter came yesterday and I noted the wording to state that Financial Aid notification would come in March. Now wondering if this means both merit and need based notification since it doesn’t specify. Many schools will notify you on the merit end either with your acceptance letter or within a week or two after the acceptance, while need based is often much later. Perhaps they only send one notification with both awards.

My S just got his acceptance letter today. He received a couple of letters wanting him to apply for the honors program. Another essay…I really don’t know much about the school- he is interested in neuroscience - any insight?

Can I ask where people who got letters are located?

Just outside Philly

We live in a Maine - received the letter today.

We are in New York. My D also received a bunch of stuff encouraging her to apply to the honors program. Most honors programs offer some perks like early registration, preferential housing, etc. Doesn’t look like Clarkson’s does, from the literature provided.

tubamomNY and onlyonemom: were the honors info. included in the same packet with the admit info. or did they come separate? same day?

Dexterdad - honors info came seperate and before the acceptance letter. One letter included a brochure describing the honors programs and other letter included a brochure describing the honors sunmer research program. Clarkson does a nice job with their marketing materials. We really liked the acceptance folder that played music when you opened it. My son will apply to the honors program.

Is your son set on attending Clarkson? Could I ask what his basic stats were? And yes, the admit folder was a unique touch.

We are from just north of Boston, and we got the honors invite as well. As far as stats, she has a 92 average (not so wonderful), a ton of APs (taking Calc AB, Physics B, CompSci A, and Lit this year), Sat 790M, 680R, 680W, and does three varsity sports with a couple of letters (x-country,indoor and outdoor track. She’s not very good).

Interestingly, I met a December Clarkson grad who is a new hire here and asked him about the Honors program. He was in the honors program the first 3 semesters. I know from his manager this kid is an engineering/CS double major with a 4.0 GPA. Dropped out of honors after 3 semesters because it took time away from hid double major. The honors progam specficially, he says, is focussed more on service and social change/impact than a deeper dive technically. It also comes witha $2000 scholarship.

Clarkson is a possibility but she is likely to end up at UMass Lowell as it is only 40 minutes away and she got a nice scholarship from them, making it only $10,000/yr to send her there. Can’t see Clarkson coming anywhere near that financially but who knows.

Dexterdad- my son has not decided where he will attend- he applied to 11 schools and final decision will depend on FA and program / school fit. S does like the idea of being part of the honors program. So far he has been accepted to Clarkson, UNE, UVM - presidential scholarship to the last two.

His stats - 90/100 -GPA
Stat- 2130 - Cr 800, M 690, W 640
ACT 33

My son is panicking as he has not received an acceptance letter yet while a couple of his classmates did get in, who also were accepted to the honors program. We visited Clarkson and we both loved it- everything but the cost of attendance, that is! Their acceptance rate is very high so with his test scores being high and his grades being ok (some challenging courses but then some low grades in easier classes that should have been A’s but he slacked off), we thought he’d be accepted. He has been receiving a lot of information/invitations to apply to the honors college; my guess, since they didn’t accept him yet, is that they will use whether or not he applies (he is) and the application material (a few writing pieces about himself) to make a decision about his acceptance. He emailed admissions regarding his concern about not hearing from them and he was told they “have experienced record high numbers of applicants this year so applications are still being reviewed.” He is kicking himself now for not being more focused academically, though he received a Presidential Scholarship from Western New England University and has strongly considered going to Hudson Valley Community College, since we’ve heard their mechanical engineering program is very good and graduates are accepted into RPI and Clarkson. The savings would be tremendous, but of course it would be a different college experience. There have been plenty of important life lessons to be learned through this process, thankfully!
